Romneys Gaffe Lost Him Tonights Debate By Marc A. Thiessen
Presidential debates are not like Cambridge Union debates. Victory does not go to the most articulate debater or the person who comes up with the cleverest line. Victory goes to the candidate who does not say something that will end up in his opponents campaign ads. By this standard, Mitt Romney lost tonight.
To see why, think back to the 2004 presidential debates. Back then, the pundits declared John Kerry the winner of his debates with George W. Bush. Kerry was more articulate than Bush and seemed in greater command of the issues. But unlike Bush, Kerry made a devastating gaffe when he declared that any presidential decision to go to war must first pass a global test of legitimacy. Bush seized upon the remark, and it became a staple of his campaign speeches -- and fodder for this devastating campaign ad:
After being pummeled for the remark, an exasperated Kerry was left sputtering: Its almost sad; its certainly pathetic, because all they can do is grab a little phrase and try to play a game and scare Americans.
Mitt Romney was the John Kerry of tonights debate. He was far more articulate than Perry (who flubbed what should have been an easy attack on Romneys flip flops). But it was Romney who made the gaffe that will almost certainly appear in campaign ads that are probably being written as you read this, when he declared: There are a lot of reasons not to elect me.
You can see the ad already:

LOL.
While certainly true, it was a dumb thing to say.
Great ad!
Now, there are two potential GOP candidates for whom I will not vote under ANY circumstance: Romney, and Rick Perry. Romney is a liberal and Rick with his illegals get in-state tuition-I-have-a-heart attitude can go frick themselves. NEITHER ONE! I’ll sit it out if they’re the only ones to vote for.
I do NOT want Perry to tell me how bad Romney is,
I want Perry to explain what HE will do and why he is the best.
Perry is a shoo-in if he articulately lays out his conservative principles and agenda.
He isn’t a conservative is the crux of the problem. Not if he ‘has a heart’ for illegals.
This liberal is saying, no matter what transpires in debate, conservatives are always inarticulate but devious.
Romney is hardly toast....Perry killed any chance he had with his stupidity around immigration. That was an absolute embarrassment. Educating illegal aliens with discounts while American (LEGAL) kids have to pay full boat.
Perry was so lost up there last night it was frightening. It was like watching Tommy Boy when he kept trying to make the joke with the butcher, the steak and the cow’s ass....Perry was brutal.
“Romney: There are a lot of reasons not to elect me.
I noticed that, but it went by too fast to be seized upon and used during the debate itself .
Hmmm. Think there’s any chance Axelrod and Plouffe forgot to record it?
So who is your candidate now?
Mitt is hard to watch these days. In the clips of his speeches/appearances I’ve seen and in the debates, he has a sort of stuttering style of speaking that is distracting. It makes him sound somewhat uncertain and nervous and not at all Presidential.
>>>He isnt a conservative is the crux of the problem. Not if he has a heart for illegals.<<<
I could possibly forgive him for “having a heart” for illegals, but accusing those who don’t want to reward their illegal invasion of our country by subsidizing their college tuition, by stealing from taxpayers “heartless” is unforgivable.
He is no longer an acceptable nominee in my book.
Do you bots get a sawbuck every time you ask that stupid question ?
DO NOT post the rest of an excerpted article in comments.
I don’t have one right now. I think I’m going to end up and see what the primary choice is in Georgia when it comes to that. If either one is on the ballot, I’ll vote for anyone not them. If either one makes it to nomination, then I’m out for the count. I won’t sell my soul again like I did for McCain.
That’s a big 10-4!!!
This whole article is stupid. The MSM declared Kerry the winner but he did not come off as articulate. Kerry came off as arrogant and insincere repeating tired liberal talking points.
If Romney loses the nomination it will not because of a line in a so called “debate”. It will be because voters see him as vacillating and insincere. It will be because voters see him as someone who will not stand up for principles.
I personally think that that remark came from a place of humility and therefore didnt count it against him.
