In a post today entitled Perrys system of patronage and cronyism, Jennifer Rubin highlights a scathing report by Texans for Public Justice entitled Crony Capitalism: The Republican Governors Association in the Perry Years.
But there is another report by Texans for Public Justice that is equally disturbing. It is called The Governors Gusher, and it documents 100 wealthy donors who have sought corporate welfare, relaxed regulatory rules or other government favors in exchange for their political largess in Texas gubernatorial races.
Texans for Public Justice dubs these individuals the Profiteers and notes that The ranks of the Profiteers include corporate welfare kings, snake oil salesmen, money launderers, tax evaders, tort dodgers, tobacco hacks and toxic waste dumpers. According to TPJ director Craig McDonald, A disturbing number of these profiteers made a fortune off government handouts or by bending or breaking regulatory rules.
The report was published more than a decade ago, on Jan. 20, 2000.
Its target? Another Texas governor, George W. Bush, who had just launched a campaign for --you guessed it -- President of the United States.

Yep, the minute I read “2000”, I thought ‘what the heck’!! This is typical of what’s being thrown out there and ‘here’ every day now. Nice post shield!
The Fund was audited, committee transparency found wanting but no fraud or wrong doing discovered.
The audit was requested by the Lt. Gov who, along with Perry and the Speaker, sign off on the final investments.
From April 28, 2011: State audit faults Emerging Technology Fund's transparency
Perry's office responded Thursday, saying the report had found no fraud or violation of state law. It said many of the recommendations already are being implemented, but it disagreed with some conclusions, saying the auditor's office "discounts the legitimate need for confidentiality" for some information the state receives from companies applying for grants. ...Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who asked for the audit, and several senators welcomed the report. They had waited on it before moving legislation to change how the state invests money in startup technology companies. ...
Dewhurst said he's asked Sen. Mike Jackson, R-La Porte and chairman of the Senate Economic Development Committee, to move forward on the auditor's recommendations.
I found no evidence the legislature actually passed the recommendations mentioned in Bills would require more transparency from Texas Emerging Technology Fund (May 2011).
SB 1175 , by Jackson, was sent to Calendars in May. I see no further action. HB 3790 was postponed. Another bill on the topic of the ETF, also by Jackson, SB 1069 was also postponed by the sponsor John Davis.
Democrats opposing conservatives is one thing.
What's troubling is when FReepers take their talking points from Texans for Public Justice. Not satisfied with legitimate criticism, they take half truths and falsehoods from the left and call them their own. Downright pathetic.
NO, this article was published yesterday and referenced the other attacks against republicans by this same group.
I am ashamed of what I’m seeing the right doing. The left has sucked them into this bs and they are gleefully attacing other Republicans.
I'll go one further. I think that Sarah Palin took her talking points from this group as well when she smeared Perry with her "crony capitalism" charge last Monday night. Had Palin not uttered those words, I don't think this would be an issue on FR. Now, it's morphed into some weird world where Rick Perry wanted to kill young girls by making them take a vaccine that is a killer. It's embarrassing to me as a FReeper to have to read this, and I feel compelled to answer the ignorance.
>>> I’ll go one further. I think that Sarah Palin took her talking points from this group as well when she smeared Perry with her “crony capitalism” charge last Monday night. >>>
Wow, I hope you’re wrong about that. I don’t think a Perry-Palin fight (whether or not she gets in the race) is what we need at this point. And I would hate to think she could be duped by a group like that. I really would hate it.
You have to learn to buck up and take it like a man. When your boy runs for higher office you will see criticisms. Those I provide are true. Those George Soros makes up are probably not true, but then again we all know George and he’s a F........ Nazi POS ~ so, what can I say.
Attack the messenger if you like, but we’d better vet Perry on this stuff. If he becomes the GOP nominee these charges of pay-for-play in Texas will be the dems’ antidote for attacks by our side on Obama’s Solyndra and LightSquared scandals. If there’s fire where all this smoke is rising we need to know now, not next October when Obama’s minions start dumping the results of their opposition research on the compliant media, which will only be too happy to cooperate in spreading the steady drip-drip-drip of “ ... disturbing new revelations about crony back-scratching in Perry’s Texas ...”. This is going to be a major issue in the 2012 campaign, and while our candidate probably cannot be pure as the windblown snow, he or she better be head and shoulders above the sleaze of Obama and the dems.
Still,Perry has spent decades in the GOP ruling class elite overpopulated with Big Government RINOs. Much of his campaigns have been financed by THEIR contributors and such powerful special interests don't give bupkiss without a quid pro quo.
It is true that this can be said about many professional politicians and it is not so much a matter of vetting if he sardonically does the right thing until he gets the ultimate power to do HIS thing.
Detecting that little tyrant deep inside waiting to escape when no one can stop him can only be done by studying the off script moments all men of passion let loose. Those few examples of ugly personal honesty that contradicts the hologram one wants the people to see only.
I won't go into Perry's cause they have already been done to death—suffice it to say I will only say that I will vote for Perry before I would vote for Hunstman,Romney,Paul or Obama.
I agree that politicians take shots, some of them unfair. What I find troubling is that Sarah Palin seemingly used talking points from a Dem group that uses “crony capitalism” as its primary smear.
Confusion, sorry, I copy and pasted that from the article where it was referring to the earlier report targeting President Bush.
I agree. Reason is the fundamental foundation of conservatism and the endless threads pushing talking points, smears, and agenda driven attacks from the left on FR is shameful.
I understand that people have emotional investments in particular or potential candidates, but the main focus of this website should be honest debate, reason, and defeating Obama and Company. Let the best man/woman win.
This is the type of rants and raves leveled against GW Bush in 2000. They turned out to be more malcontents, misfits and militants then true blue, mainstream conservatives.
And they’ve been whining ever since.
I thought that I read a thread earlier today about this group and they are lib Dems funded by Dems. That the Washing Compost would "report" this isn't a surprise.
