Okay, I know it's a little long and a bit preachy, but I felt this needs to be said.
Feel free to differ with me--I know some will.

memorials should be uplifting.
the hole with water falling is not uplifting.

I especially like the line about “shared sacrifice” instead of individual greatness. I think you’ve expressed why I don’t have any interest in tomorrow’s circus. I mean, ceremony. It’s just going to be an arena full of people who don’t really seem to GET what happened, or why, or what we need to do about it.

The hole in the ground is a memorial of sorts.
It’s a memorial to the left’s hatred of America.
A mosque at that location would be icing on their cake.

My husband just walked through and saw what I was watching on FNC. He started railing that we should have immediately rebuilt the Twin Towers and shown that we weren't beaten by the attack.
Instead, we get a huge hole in the ground filling up with water. Add to that, no first responders allowed at the ceremony and nothing remotely resembling our founding Christianity present either.
What an embarrassment! It's like we're hanging our heads in shame! In our home, we will be commemorating the 10 year anniversary of being attacked in our own way....prayers, lots of prayers!

Hate to state the obvious, but it's a
union job that will never be done . . . witness the horrible scam done in Boston with the freeway tunnels. There's no excuse for the massive finger in the eye of Americans by the union "contractors" for stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling, and stalling, and stalling, stalling this project.
When you consider what our military built in DAYS in WWII and then look at that insult in downtown Manhattan, you wonder why there's never been an investigation by SOMEBODY as to why there's still a huge hole there 10 years later.

I know that I am in the minority, but I kind of like it. Photos from above don’t really do it justice. I find it, peaceful.

Today, a decade later, we have a park and a giant gaping hole in New York City ![](http://assets.dnainfo.com/generated/photo/2011/08/1314837805.jpg/image640x480.jpg)
It is frustrating it is not already complete. But to claim all we have is a hole in the ground is false.
Personally, liked this design better.

Aren’t most or all of the buildings around WTC 1 and 2 already re-built?

Those holes reminded me of storm sewers when I first saw them on tv. Perhaps they look better if one is actually there. I love the idea of fountains, but these are kind of reverse fountains, things going down instead of going up. Kind of symptomatic of the whole ground zero building project. And it took ten years to do this?

According to Wikipedia, the park is near completion. Ground breaking for Freedom Tower was in April of 2006 (over 5 years ago) and it is up to 80 floors with glass up to the 54th floor. Tower 4 is up to 38 floors with glass up to the 15th floor. The Port Authority Transportation Hub is nearing completion and towers 3&4 have apparently had their foundations laid.
A little poetic license please. The fact remains that it has taken more than twice as long since ground breaking just to get a partially completed tower 1 and with over a decade passing, no building is completed.
Again, the Empire State building was built in 18 months, and Tower 1 of the old WTC completed in just 2 years. Apparently we cannot do what we were capable of doing just forty years ago.

A lot of it of it is red tape and local, state and federal regulations. Mark Steyn was talking about this yesterday while he was hosting the Rush Limbaugh show, how we were able to build the Empire State Building in 18 months during the Great Depression and how today it would take 18 months just to get a permit to build a wheelchair ramp.

For fun, I like the middle finger design. I would have preferred that we rebuild the two towers on exactly the same location as the originals slightly higher and within as short a time as possible. Both original tower 1 was begun in 68 and tower two in 1969 and both were occupied by 1972.
The gaping hole (holes really) are the two "lakes" intended to memorialize the towers.
It all reminds me of the "Black Gash" the scar that is the Vietnam Memorial in the National Mall. It speaks of defeatism rather than can-doism

Don't worry. It won't always be a hole in the ground. Eventually, something will be built on the site.

Oh, well. That was then when men were men and there was no OSHA! Or environmental impact studies! Oh, how we have fallen.
