I think being armed plays a difference too. I’d take a gun-toting Beethoven-loving friend over a liberal Slayer fan any day. :O)

Personally, I prefer Alt Nation. I will confess though, that after 9/11, I used to listen to Sandstorm and imagine it being blasted from helicopters as they swept through Iraq or Iran or wherever. It got me through.

You are correct... it is the perfect music for killing, raping and pillaging
It drives me insane in seconds. Can’t stand it.

You cannot consider metal until you’ve gone through Iron Maiden’s whole back catalog. And that spans from 1980 through to 2010 so far. 30 years of some of literally the best metal to be had in the world.
Go through their music, from starting in 1980 through to their current work, in 2010. It’ll only develop a deeper love for the music.

Really? Race war is what you think of? The whole classically trained with a newfound appreciation of heavey metal thing, I get. But you think of race war?

It might be that on some level you’re responding to the fact that many metal writers and musicians are themselves classically trained. It shows in so many ways, once you embrace or at least accept the typically primal, raw nature of the sound, that intense, screaming energy. There are actually any number of orchestral arrangements of popular metal songs, the Russians are especially fond of doing so with Metallica. Along those lines, you might enjoy Apocalyptica.
The warlike strain that so struck you is particularly vivid with groups out of northern Europe, if lyrics sung in a language other than English doesn’t disturb you. Those old Viking genes welling up I suppose.

Check out “The Trooper” and “Sunlight And Steel” by Iron Maiden. Also “Screaming For Vengeance” and “Electric Eye” by Judas Priest. You won’t be sorry.
