Obama to Honor 11 NASCAR Drivers, Five Decline

Apparently Obama plans to honor NASCAR playoff champion Jimmie Johnson and 11 other drivers in a White House ceremony next week, but five of the 2010 playoff contenders are skipping out. Ouch.

"(SB Nation) — NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers — Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart — will not be attending the White House visit due to “schedule conflicts.”

They must be very busy people. Regardless of one’s political views, the president is still the president — and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You’d think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon — if that’s indeed the reason — could be rescheduled. After all, this is the President of the United States we’re talking about here.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president’s invitation simply seems strange.

Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth will attend."

When the President is going after NASCAR drivers you know he is desperate for votes. After all, which demographics holds the majority of NASCAR fans? Midwest, gun-toting white men - the voter base President Obama doesn't like, but has to pretend to like to win another term.

So I think we all know what happens next: "Those white bigoted racists are too good to shake hands with a black president?" Yes Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson, just as racist as you would be if you declined such an offer from good old George W.

Is Carl still the points leader? I haven't been able to keep up with the season. Anyway, will sure be cheering these five on.

This is a great comparison picture. I suspect the number of Americans preferring Perry in it greatly outnumbers those supporting ? ? ? on the right.

The enemedia would probably describe Perry as a dangerous warmonger and The One as a philosophical young scholar. gag

Thanks. Then, our boys — the Freedom Five:):) -— need the cheering on. Come on, Carl; he has the best chance. Baby needs new shoes....

This is the President that probably wants to trade their current race cars in for racing Smart cars.

Yeah, there was a time, long ago, when the drivers and crews (self made men) were what made NASCAR. As it is with all things money talks and nowadays the drivers and crews are just employees of NASCAR.

I thought the drivers and crews were employed by the teams?

That’s why Tony Stewart left Gibbs to form his own team.

The first rule of sponsorship is that 40% of the money goes to the owner as “management fees”.

I have been becoming less and less interested in following nascar. All good things must end so, since nascar has embraced obama, hell with nascar. Unless forced to, I do not have anything to do with anything that is remotely affiliated with obama. I got along well before I even tknew that there was such a thing as nascar, I will survive without it.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers **accept** the president’s invitation simply seems strange.

I agree with your statement.

me and nascar are not going to miss each other.
