The federal government has rescinded it's bizarre deadline to change all the street signs in the country and credit goes to Sen. Pat Toomey.
The Federal Highway Administration in 2009 mandated that street name signs throughout the nation be upper/lower case with a deadline of 2018.
For the historically challenged, 2009 is the first year of the Obama era.
It would have been a costly and wasteful endeavor with the burden falling on municipal governments.
The cost to replace a street sign is about $50. It adds up. The expense to New York City was estimated to be $28 million.
Anyway, last November Pennsylvania elected a new Republican senator and upon taking office Sen. Toomey made it a point to make common sense prevail. First, he got Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to grant a exception to Lower Merion -- a place that was not what one would describe as supportive of Toomey's election it should be noted -- to save grant the township a waiver to save its historic and picturesque street signs.

Pat Toomey makes a difference ping
About as smart at Missouri spending $4 million on tenth of a mile highway markers.
Totally insane. What a waste of money and an abuse of federal power. Why are street signs the business of the federal government? If a town wants no street signs or street signs in Mandarin, so what. That’s for the town folk to decide. These people are power hungry monsters.
Any time you hear the press and politicans moaning about needing money for “the nation’s crumbling infrastructure,” remember this. This is what those dollars get spent on. Useless nonsense. New signs, fancy electronic billboards and “smart” traffic monitoring systems, sidewalks in the middle of farm country. Its spending for the sake of spending. Toomey is a great senator. Lots of common sense, very knowledgeable, good conservative instincts and makes his case in a low key way. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him run for president one day.
We saw that last year coming up I-55. Me and dad both thought ‘what a huge waste’ and speculated someone got a sweetheart contract.
Pat Toomey is among the very best in Congress. He is bright, articulate, and shows great judgment.
But you go over to Radnor and their signs are quite visible. It was stupid to force a worthless change on any town.
Common sense; what a novel idea.
But I am sure some well-connected person made some coin off the taxpayers for it, they always seem to do so.
What about all the local unions that were prepping their four man crews, their traffic control flag persons and legions of, schedulers supervisors and foremen to handle the sign changing task? I'll bet some cities were planning to do this at night so as not to disrupt traffic, but to pay out plenty of overtime.
Actually, I'd be ticked about any mandates to have them on non-federal roads.
EXACTLY!!!!
Note the lack of upper-lower case letters. We're you able to read it?
Libs will say this is a job killer.
Excellent post!
I wonder if they would have had to change. I forget if they are u/l case.
Springfield has pretty good signs & yup they would have had to replace theirs.
Uhh, street sign manufactures are not making as many signs as they used to so donate a few grand to a politician and get millions in return. Plus the union thugs at the sign company have a cushy job for a few more years and will vote democrap.
I like the 1/10th markers too. Same with the smart monitoring systems that tell you how long its going to take to get to a certain point on the highway. But not if they are adding to a $1 trillion + per year deficit. Its priorities. We don’t have the money to spend on any of it right now.
