Rick Perry back to basics (didn't he promise to serve out his full term if re-elected?)
August 20, 2011 | techno

Posted on 08/20/2011 6:43:09 PM PDT by techno

According to the Austin-American Statesman's Politifact Texas Perry-O-Meter Rick Perry at least twice promised he would not not run for President in 2012:

a)He told a questioner at a January 2010 debate that he would "absolutely" serve out his full new 4-year term.

b)In December 2010 Perry told Reuters, "I don't want to be president of the United States. I'm not going to run for the presidency of the United States."

And from EFC polfacts:

a) In a Nov 8, 2010 interview with Newsweek (after he had been re-elected):

"Not going to run for president. Not going to be a vice-presidential candidate. Not going to be in anybody's cabinet. And I suspect I'm not going to be anybody's ambassador either."

But in announcing the launch of his book tour on October 30, 2010, Perry was more ambiguous.

Responding to a question of his running for President in 2012 Perry said:

"No, I've answered that about as many times and as many ways as I can."

But he refused to commit to serving out a full term if re-elected:

"I'm guaranteeing people that I'll get in there and do the best job I can for 'em as governor...I just think it's all premature to be making a statement about you're going to be doing two, four, six or eight years from now--I don't ever take anything off the table."

From yahoo.com on May 25/2011:

"Rick Perry has repeatedly said he won't run for president in 2012 but there are signs he might not stick to his PLEDGE."

To whom it may concern:

I am a Palinista and I understand once Sarah Palin gets into the Presidential race she will be attacked for "quitting" (leaving office before her full term was up).

But here are the parameters on the issue imho;

1)Sarah Palin cannot be criticized by Rick Perry, a Perry operative or Perry supporter at any web site for "quitting". That is out of bounds and would be hypocritical.

2)If you are undecided and you choose to support Perry because in your mind Palin "quit" then you are also being a hypocrite and disingenuous.

3)If you are a Palinista, you have no right to criticize Perry for walking away before his full term is up (I am not criticizing Perry but just pointing out the facts).

4)And if you support someone other than Palin or Perry (eg Romney, Bachmann, Huntsman (he also left his post early, didn't he), Gingrich or Cain) neither your candidate nor yourself has any right to criticize Palin for "quitting" if you do not mention Perry in the same breath. Singling Palin out would be disingenuous.

In summary, records are records and facts are facts. Why isn't the media putting more focus on Perry "quitting" as they did with Palin?

I think the answer is obvious. The MSM doesn't want to do anything to undermine Perry in his quest to stop Palin from getting the nomination.

Total garbage. She had good reason to resign and you know it.

How’s about a little 11th commandment observance around here.
You know Reagan’s 11th.

You know they’re as much as conducting a war agaist us don’t you?

We need all the generals we can get right now. The rinos are n the run. We have more good possibilities now than we did at this time in 07 or 08. Perry. Palin. Bachman. Santorum. Cain. Let this process play out.

Anybody who gets so mentally tied up in a candidate that they start spouting this kinda BS is flipping nuts, in the same way Paultoids and Obama worshipers are.

Quit wanking into toilet paper and get a life dimbulb.

Don't get me wrong.

I think we should vigorously discuss the positions of all our candidates. There are parts of Perry's past that disturb me and are clearly fair game for those who do not support him.

Having said that, the desperation in some of these threads / posts is also bothersome. The desire of some FReepers to unfairly slime one candidate in order to try to build up another is counter-productive to the bigger cause.

Rick Perry better make damned sure to put a muzzle on the people working for him with regards to the “quitting” issue and Sarah Palin.

From all appearances, Palin and Perry like and respect each other and I don't see them getting into the gutter.

Neither one of them really has much control over what their supporters can say or do.

The only thing either of them could do is maybe condemn one of their supporters doing something tacky like say, putting an ad in a newspaper asking the general public to report things about their sex lives.

We all hope things will stay civil, but we also know from experience that they won't.

If the candidates themselves can stay above the fray, that should be acceptable.

And to boot “the quitter Sarah Palin” endorsed Rick Perry and helped to propel him over the goal line in the GOP gubernatorial primary vote by helping Perry get 51% of the vote and avoid a run-off.

If Sarah hadn’t “quit” she may not have had as much impact on the Perry race and I think an argument could be made Perry might not have reached the magic 50% mark in the race and therefore may have faced the general election against White in a weakened condition.

Guarantee, Rick Perry would have no use for becoming anybody’s VP.

Why would he leave Texas to become somebody’s VP?

Why would he leave a place he deeply loves?

Why would he do so on the ticket of a 47 yr old when he’s past 60 and is calculating 8 years worth for the next President?

Why would he do so when he’s the one with years and years of experience in the Governorship and Lt. Governorship of a big population state like TX?

As a Texan, I’m thrilled Perry is running for the presidency. Perry’s contempt for Obama is personal as Bambi has been at war with Texas from day one of his administration. Perry has the true fire in the belly to beat this little commie puke, and that’s what I want in a candidate.

Just today we find out we may have rolling blackouts here in Texas because Obama’s EPA guidelines are not being met fast enough. With 100 temps still ongoing here, this could actually mean lives lost. Obama hates Texans.

The best thing Perry can do for Texas is to get rid of Bambi.

Four more years of Obama and there is nothing left of Texas or of the rest of this country.

And, I have no problem with Palin having resigned as governer - I understand and accept her reasons.

Whoever the GOP candidate is, I will be voting for him/her. No sitting in the corner pouting and crying if my guy doesn’t win the primary.

I’m with Sarah - ANYONE BUT OBAMA!

Palin is the Quitter’s Quitter. In the middle of a term, with nothing on the horizon...she Quit to make a deal with Discovery / Goldman. Quit Quit Quit.

So now we have different categories of quitters.

So Perry is only a level 1 quitter and Palin is a level 2 quitter.

People accuse me of being delusional or crazy.

C’mon man!

Not if you care more about the state you are governing, which Sarah clearly did, and that is why she resigned. Context, context, context. If sarah had a history of quitting jobs then I would be very suspect of her resignation, but she does not, so that resignation was unique with unique conditions. Her past shows that she has been a loyal and very hardworking servant, and she continued with that by resigning in light of heavy burdens that were keeping her from doing her job.

Well, Perry would have probably gotten that anyway, but it was good that Palin endorsed him. Debra Medina and Kay Bailey Hutchison were both pretty unpopular by the time the primary rolled around.

And since neither Governor Perry nor any of his campaign staff has accused Governor Palin of being a "quitter," then why all of the unnecessary angst?

Chill out.

Open a beer.

Maybe put on one of the pre-season football games.

Enjoy life a little.

Serving 12 years as Governor and leaving 2 years early IF he won to be President is not the same as quitting in your first term. I think you know that or you wouldn’t be hellbent on trying to say he shouldn’t touch the topic.

My question for you is why you think Perry cares about how long she served. If you hadn’t noticed he’s building his campaign theme around generating jobs. If he gets caught up in petty arguments like this that means he’s off message.

I agree with you in principle — if Perry quit to run for President, Palin shouldn’t attack him for it, and Perry shouldn’t attack her for quitting.

On the other hand, if he wins the Presidency, and therefore is forced to leave the Governorship, that is not really the same as quitting. And in fact, it is common for politicians to have to leave the current office they hold if they get elected to a new office.

And the nice thing about it is, generally speaking, in order to make that happen, the politician has to face the voters who put them in the previous office, and get their approval.

So, if Perry wins the election, it would be because he won the election in Texas (no way he wins without Texas). And if a majority of Texans vote for him for President, that will be approval of his moving on — it will be THEIR OWN votes that move him out of the Governorship.

And of course, the argument made in this post would be moot anyway — he’ll only stop being Governor if he actually wins the nomination and election, and until then he hasn’t quit so nobody can attack him for quitting.

You could attack him for running for office while still holding his governorship — except not only have almost every candidate who was an officeholder done that, but Sarah Palin actually did that in 2008, so there’s no way to make the argument that he should quit to run by Palin supporters.

BTW, I actually think it would be better for people to quit their jobs to run for higher office, but I don’t expect them to.

Most politicians say they aren't running until they throw their hat into the ring...

except those who can't make up their mind.
