Rick Perry back to basics (didn't he promise to serve out his full term if re-elected?)
August 20, 2011 | techno

Posted on 08/20/2011 6:43:09 PM PDT by techno

According to the Austin-American Statesman's Politifact Texas Perry-O-Meter Rick Perry at least twice promised he would not not run for President in 2012:

a)He told a questioner at a January 2010 debate that he would "absolutely" serve out his full new 4-year term.

b)In December 2010 Perry told Reuters, "I don't want to be president of the United States. I'm not going to run for the presidency of the United States."

And from EFC polfacts:

a) In a Nov 8, 2010 interview with Newsweek (after he had been re-elected):

"Not going to run for president. Not going to be a vice-presidential candidate. Not going to be in anybody's cabinet. And I suspect I'm not going to be anybody's ambassador either."

But in announcing the launch of his book tour on October 30, 2010, Perry was more ambiguous.

Responding to a question of his running for President in 2012 Perry said:

"No, I've answered that about as many times and as many ways as I can."

But he refused to commit to serving out a full term if re-elected:

"I'm guaranteeing people that I'll get in there and do the best job I can for 'em as governor...I just think it's all premature to be making a statement about you're going to be doing two, four, six or eight years from now--I don't ever take anything off the table."

From yahoo.com on May 25/2011:

"Rick Perry has repeatedly said he won't run for president in 2012 but there are signs he might not stick to his PLEDGE."

To whom it may concern:

I am a Palinista and I understand once Sarah Palin gets into the Presidential race she will be attacked for "quitting" (leaving office before her full term was up).

But here are the parameters on the issue imho;

1)Sarah Palin cannot be criticized by Rick Perry, a Perry operative or Perry supporter at any web site for "quitting". That is out of bounds and would be hypocritical.

2)If you are undecided and you choose to support Perry because in your mind Palin "quit" then you are also being a hypocrite and disingenuous.

3)If you are a Palinista, you have no right to criticize Perry for walking away before his full term is up (I am not criticizing Perry but just pointing out the facts).

4)And if you support someone other than Palin or Perry (eg Romney, Bachmann, Huntsman (he also left his post early, didn't he), Gingrich or Cain) neither your candidate nor yourself has any right to criticize Palin for "quitting" if you do not mention Perry in the same breath. Singling Palin out would be disingenuous.

In summary, records are records and facts are facts. Why isn't the media putting more focus on Perry "quitting" as they did with Palin?

I think the answer is obvious. The MSM doesn't want to do anything to undermine Perry in his quest to stop Palin from getting the nomination.

“I totally understand why Palin resigned (lawsuits, etc.) but most candidates don’t.”

The main problem there was the laws in Alaska that made her defend out of pocket for official business. I doubt many would have or tried to withstand the onslaught of frivolous suits if they had similar laws to contend with. Nor would I blame them.

I totally understood why she resigned.

And like you, I don’t blame her.

It was political b.s.

I’m still amazed those laws were even on the books. They are insane. But leave it to the Libs and Dems to capitalize on insanity. They damn near have a monopoly on it.

The silver lining is that they overreached as is SOP for them. Even if Palin doesn’t get elected, their BS up there set her on a course of making their lives (politically speaking) hell. One way or the other, we on the Right all benefit from that ;)

Oh, but see, none of his assurances or promises matter now, because, well, his wife told him to run. Everybody knows that's the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card for any promise.

Honestly, Perry has quit every time he’s been re-elected. He quit being a conservative when he went along with the TransTexas Corridor.

He quit being a conservative when he pushed the whole Gardasil issue.

He quit being a conservative when he signed on to in-state tuition for illegals.

There are many more instances of him quitting, but these correlate well enough with his re-elections. He’s a conservatism-quitter multiple times.

This is NOT everything in my arsenal but simply one point of many why the MSM is favoring Perry over Palin.

Palin joined a national ticket about 20 months into her first term and then quit entirely before the first term was complete.

You're attacking a guy who is already 10 years on the job because he sees an opportunity (or need because the field has not yet produced a strong horse) for him to run against Obama because he told a questioner 20 months before he announced his candidacy that he would serve his full term?

If, somehow, he's the 45th president of the United States it won't happen until he's been governor for a dozen years. If he doesn't get the nomination he's still governor. He may still serve that full term.

It's really up to Texans if they "forgive" him. Clinton polled on that very question when he was running for POTUS to see if the promise he'd made to fill out his term would be held against him by Arkansans.

I don't see where Palin fans have any room to talk on this issue and, as already pointed out, Obama who promised not to run in his first term as Senator for damned sure does not either.

If Palin's read on the field is Perry won't win, then she should get in today. Announce on the Sunday shows. Until Perry joined, Romney was far out in front.

If you were Perry or Palin would you really sit on the sidelines and say we'll risk Romney vs Obama instead of running yourselves? I don't think so.

Ridding us all of the Obama regime is too important.

Rick Perry has declared war on Sarah Palin through his rep Marc Thiessen this morning on Fox who called Palin out “on the quitting meme” while defending Perry.

The gloves are now off.

Shame, shame, shame!

“Do you pay taxes in Texas? If not...why the he!! would you care?”

That is self evident. Think about it. Rick Perry is running for President of the United States, and every taxpayer in every state has an interest in how he has taken care of taxpayers’ money, including and especially money the taxpayers pay to HIM.

“I have a gripe over franchise tax, but that was actually passed by the legislature. You act like Perry is an unfettered king. The cigarette tax and fireworks tax? That affected a very small part of the population.”

I will grant you that Perry is not a king. Indeed the governor of Texas is weak institutionally compared to states like Louisiana and Alaska. Still, you say the legislature passed the tax (Don’t they pass every tax). WHy didn’t Perry veto it?

********************************

“No doubt the state’s debt has doubled. But do ya think..just maybe that has to do with the economy?”

Not just the debt has doubled but state spending has doubled as well on Perry’s watch. Perry has never been known as a fiscal hawk. The state budget (which was not small in 2001 has doubled under Perry. And up until 2008, the national economy has been booming.

*******************************

“I don’t know that Perry will be my candidate of choice. But looking at the last debate..who did you imagine seeing on the stage with Obama that might have a chance?”

Not everyone who is running for President next year (including Perry at that time) was ON the stage. I want a candidate with Executive Experience, but not one like Perry who has doubled the state budget. How about one who actually REDUCED her predecessor’s budget by 9.5% from $11.7 billion in 2007 to 10.57 billion in 2010, all in the middle of the Obama recession, when other budgets (like Texas’) were exploding. She was not on stage on stage either last week. But she will be.

Likewise if you’re a RINO squish you have no right to criticize Palin’s 2 1/2 years as guv—you’re trying to get Christie to run 18 months into his term.

He served two full terms and will have served most of his third. Palin quit half way through her first. There is a bit of a difference there, wouldn’t you agree?

>>>How do we describe PDS vs. PDS?

Palin-deity syndrome vs. Perry-deity syndrome... both are rampant, and obnoxious.

No difference.

Perry broke his pledge to fulfill his term and to not run for President in 2012. Longevity in office has nothing to do with the issue.

Folks in Texas voted for him based on his pledge.

Having said that I am NOT attacking Perry for breaking his pledge. All I am saying Perry or his reps have no right to call Sarah Palin out “on the quitting meme” which I posted earlier his rep Marc Thiessen did earlier this morning.

As another poster said, you really need to get a reality check, and maybe a brain transplant as well.

With your attitude and intellect, it's no wonder a lot of people think conservatives are stupid fools.

“But she will be.”

Okey doke...I see where you are coming from now.

I think it will be great if Sarah declares. I like her a lot.

If Sarah had been gov of Alaska as long as Perry has been gov of Texas, I’m pretty sure there would be plenty of legislation and missteps to broadcast. And no, before you think I am digging her for early resignation, I’m not. I fully understand her reasons...and agree with her resignation. But facts are facts...10 years in office is a long time to have dodged detractors.

I’m fine with Perry or Palin. Both have similar ideology...and are actually sympatico with one another.
