Banking and housing WERE NOT deregulated! There are and were thousands of pages of regulations. It has never been more regulated but the Government, to promote "diversity" forced financial institutions to lend money to people who could not afford the mortgages.
The politicians knew these mortgages were going to go under and take the economy with it.
