Romney vs Palin (ABC/WAPO GOP contender poll and interpretation of results)
July 21, 2011 | techno

Posted on 07/21/2011 12:39:37 AM PDT by techno

I have been complaining the last couple of weeks that MSM pollsters have been not including Sarah Palin in the mix thereby inflating Mitt Romney's national poll numbers as well as those of Michele Bachmann.

Based on this ABC/WAPO poll of the GOP presidential contenders released today I was mostly wrong about Romney but right on Bachmann.

This poll was conducted only of GOP primary voters including Republicans and independents who lean to the GOP between July 14-17 before word got out about Bachmann's migraine headaches.

First let me summarize the poll results:

ROMNEY--------------26% (21)

PALIN---------------18% (17)

BACHMANN------------12% (3)

PAUL-----------------9% (6)

PERRY----------------8% (-)

CAIN-----------------6%(4)

GINGRICH-------------5%(6)

HUNTSMAN-------------3%(-)

PAWLENTY-------------2%(4)

SANTORUM-------------2%(-)

Brackets June 7, 2011.

Now the results without Rick Perry in the race:

ROMNEY---------------28%

PALIN----------------19%

BACHMANN-------------13%

PAUL-----------------10%

CAIN-----------------7%

GINGRICH-------------5%

HUNTSMAN-------------3%

SANTORUM-------------3%

PAWLENTY-------------2%

Now how the candidates rate on attributes:

----------LEADER UNDERSTANDS EXPERIENCE ISSUES VALUES

ROMNEY------27-------18----------27---------21------19

PALIN-------16-------23----------11---------20------20

BACHMANN----8--------11-----------7---------10------11

GINGRICH----11--------4----------16----------5-------9

PERRY-------8---------5----------8-----------5-------7

PAUL--------5---------9----------6-----------10------8

CAIN--------4---------5----------3-----------5-------4

From the ABC blog:

a) "Palin is essentially tied with Romney among evangelical WHITE protestants."

b) Bachmann runs evenly with Romney among very conservative Republicans and among strong supporters of the Tea Party movement. ABC/WAPO calculates that the latter make up a little more than 1/4 of all Republicans and all independents who lean to the GOP.

c) Bachmann runs evenly with Romney among Republicans and leaners who are following the presidential race closely.

d)Among college graduates Romney has 32% of their support, Palin only 9%. But among non-college grads Palin leads Romney 23% to 22%.

e)"Bachmann's appeal is mainly to Tea Party supporters. Palin's appeal is more broad-based..."

f)"Palin is a more empathetic figure."

Summary:

1)This poll proves that Michele Bachmann did get a bump in the polls as a result of her performance in the NH debate on June 13 but not as great as many polls have suggested.

Of course that narrative was fed further by pollsters deliberately not including Sarah Palin in the mix. As you can see by this poll by virtue of Palin being polled as well, she is again in a solid second place position and the only candidate within single digits of Mitt Romney.

2)I know many freepers don't particularly like Mitt Romney and don't think he is electable as the GOP nominee but objectively he can win the nomination but will he win it that is a different matter.

3)This poll is just more evidence that Pawlenty, Gingrich, Huntsman, and Santorum might as well think about packing their bags with Cain not too far behind if he performs poorly in the Ames straw poll in 3 weeks.

4)As to the attributes I was quite surprised that the respondents consider Palin twice as worthy as Bachmann in the areas of leadership, issues, values and empathy (understanding).

Michele Bachmann is NOT Sarah Palin and apparently the GOP primary voters know that as well.

5)As expected Romney has a good lead over Palin in leadership and experience but she hangs in with him on the issues and values and beats him as ABC noted on the "empathy card".

In other words once Sarah Palin enters the race, Romney better not underestimate her.

Finally notice how low Perry's attribute numbers compare to both Romney and Palin. For a man being as heavily touted and promoted by the MSM and some in the GOP establishment as he is, you would expect those numbers to be much higher especially since he is into his 3rd term as Governor of Texas.

6)And this poll may also be a sign that The Undefeated has changed hearts and minds regarding Palin, that folks who may have regarded her as a lightweight before no longer see her in that light.

I have maintained this since the 2010 midterms: the GOP presidential race will become a showdown between Romney and Palin and I frankly don't know who will come out on top. There are still too many unknown variables at this point in the proceedings.

And yes Virginia, Sarah Palin is going to throw her hat into the ring. Even last night's Fox all-star panel is coming around to that conclusion after several months of asserting she was NOT running.

According to her doctor’s note, Bachmann knows her migraine triggers and how to avoid them.

So I guess she won’t be told about this poll.

Here’s what it tells me:

WAPO = libtard
ABC = libtard

WAPO Poll = libtard dominated
ABC Poll = libtard dominated

Romney is a libtards dream because he is an Obama minime.

Palin is up there because the libtards believe she will fail if she runs against the AnointedIdiot. Ditto for Bachmann and Paul, as well.

Lastly, the 2012 elections are a year off....but yeah, keep paying attention to these libtard conducted polls.... =.=

If you were “Team Palin” or her kitchen cabinet and had the numbers from this poll (and others, as well as internals) in your hand, would you advise her to skip it this time and try again in 2016 or some such? It is to laugh!! Do they really think that Conor Friedersdorf, Chris Matthews, Bill Maher, The Politico and the rest scare her?! She kills large wild animals, skins them and cooks them! Those fools would starve to death without snooty restaurants, Chinese take-out and Whole Foods!!

Please tell me which “white knight” candidate would do better against Mr. Obama than the individuals you mentioned...

Please be aware my inherent disclaimer: “libtards believe”

For me, at this juncture in time, I will take Daffy Duck over the AnointedIdiot. If you miss what I am saying, I will take any of them, except Romney, over the AnointedIdiot. Give it another day or two for the AnointedIdiot to come back on my TV screen, and I will follow the libtards 2008 mantra: Anyone but the AnointedIdiot. =.=

May-be, but he was leading in the wrong direction. I'd take Sarah over Mitt in a New York second.

I was in MA under Romney’s ‘leadership’, I witnessed Palin countering Obama and leading the electoral vote of 2010 and I’ve seen The Undefeated.

Believe me, Palin is 10x the leader that Romney is. The question is how many primary voters can come to understand that in the next six months.

We have to do everything we can to blow romney OUT of the water. The big/BAD money is behind him...the same money that was/is behind obama. the same crooks that bought 0’s election. Wouldn’t surprise me even a little bit if soros bundlers weren’t right in there too. He’s too slick, too comfortable, and way too smug about this...as if he’s been “promised” something.

I know a person who said her ten year old son said “That animal she killed has a higher IQ than Palin”. I held my tongue knowing the mother had put the kid up to it.

But I did point out that Palin ate the meat. Her husband said “I love hamburgers but I don’t get a kick out of killing the cows”.

To which I replied, “You don’t have to. Illegal Mexicans hit them in the heads with hammers as they come down the chute then slice their throats”. You get your meat your way, Palin get her meat her way.

We don’t talk anymore. Dealing with retards is just too stressful trying to make sense out of their weak arguements and knowing the logic you throw at them goes right over their heads.

I agree. Even if Sarah does not run, we need to pick an alternate, so to speak, and ensure Mitt doesn't get the nod. With the huge field, this is beginning to look like last time all over. If Sarah runs, I'm behind her, but we have to have a choice in case she doesn't.

Unfortunately, this is beginning to remind me of Fred Thompson last time, and multitudes of people had no viable other choice.

I'm not accusing Sarah of being a Fred, she hasn't said she is running after all (despite what we'd like) and it is danged early in the game. But we have to stop Mitt from gaining momentum.

Beautiful response! Some people aren't any easier to educate than it is to teach a pig to dance ballet. (You just frustrate yourself and tick off the pig).

There are simply too many more productive ways to spend your time.

I know what you are saying. Cain is good until he talks "Fair Tax", which I see as flawed. It doesn't help that he is a former Federal Reserve Governor.

Ron Paul has been painted with the "kook" brush for his stand on forein policy and for some of the people who showed up where he did. Despite having read what he has written for over a decade, and that he comes off better in print than in a 'debate', I have to note that almost everything I have seen from him on the issues has a solid basis in the Constitution, even though there are many who will take offense at that. If we followed the original intent closely, there would be lots of gored oxen on both sides of the aisle.

So despite his solid appeal to a group characterized as 'troofers' and 'dope smokers', he does have a little traction among strict Constitutionalists. Who will be left picking whoever comes closest to that stance in the long run, or voting by write-in (quite possibly third party).

It is a hard group to woo, especially when RINOs are completely unpalatable.

Bachman is good, but lacks polish, I think she is a diamond in the rough, but will have a hard time overcoming her Democrat background. HHH and all that, even though the Dems of old were to the right of some of the RINOs out there. We're trying to get rid of that and achieve critical mass for TEA party types, who will restore fiscal sanity and a modicum of conservative social values to America, or at least write the sort of legislation which will not work against (with our tax money) those ends.

Her lack of executive experience will work against her, and the media will attack her like Sarah, an onslaught she may deal with well--we'll see. I have to note they harp about her migraines (See a good chiropractor Michelle!), but we have yet to see the medical records of the TOTUS.

She is my second choice after Sarah, and first of those who are definitely in the race.

How has Perry been on the issues? Sometimes big Texas money isn't so far out of alignment with TEA party aims that that would be a bad step, although LBJ was definitely the wrong one (but he was a Democrat).

Mitt isn’t really gaining momentum, and there really isn’t much higher he can go. All those 2s 3s and 4s add up to 10. Huntsman, Pawlenty, Santorum, other establishment candidates, really aren’t taking off, because Romney has 30 % of the establishment half. And Perry is taking some establishment money from Romney. There’s still the tea party half, where Palin would be comfortable.
