I will try to make this vanity post quick and to the point. As you will notice by looking at my profile, I am new to Free Republic. I have enjoyed reading all the articles posted at Free Republic for a few year now, and just recently jumped in to become an active member.
I am an evangelical young earth right wing conservative who has voted for every Republican presidential nominee going all the way back to Jerald Ford. Like many of you the internet has broadened my knowledge of the world around me. Then I found Free Republic and it seemed like a whole new world of knowledge has been presented to me that I was not getting anywhere else.
One thing I noticed at Free Republic, is that many Freepers have their own blogs, and they post portions of their articles here for other Freepers to read. I also noticed that many Freepers take offense to bloggers as they refer to them as blog pimps. However, I also noticed that not all bloggers are refereed to as blog pimps, and that is part of my question.
What exactly makes one a blog pimp and what makes one a respected blogger? Also, of all the bloggers who post their articles here, which Freeper bloggers are the best ones to follow?
DUmmie FUnnies is often excellent.
Over a decade ago, FR got taken to court for depriving some major news sources of website hits in an argument over copyright vs. fair use doctrine. The fallout from that was that some sources can no longer be posted on FR. Some require an excerpt with a link to the original source for the full article and some may still be posted in their entirety.
The excerpted articles were generally received as an inconvenience by FReepers at the time since we were used to coming here and reading the full articles and discussing them here. Some links required registration at the sources to read the full articles etc., so it was viewed as a bad thing.
Then, a lot off bloggers came along who, while posting their own content, excerpted it to push hits for their blogs, even though there was no requirement for the articles to be excerpted since the copyright holder (if there was one) was the person posting the article to FR, so excerpting, which was viewed by most folks as a necessary evil to view some source material, became a means for folks to 'pimp' their own blogs, using FR as the street corner.
Subsequently, the view on Vanities has somewhat changed, i.e. if you're a member of FR and feel you have something worth posting that will be thought provoking, intriguing, and want to have it viewed, read and hashed out here on FR, post the whole thing.
We'll let you know what we think of it. 'Blog pimping' is generally frowned upon (except of course by the pimps) by those of us that perceive FR as a conservative community and gathering place. If a person wants to have their blog, article, column, etc. read and discussed here they're certainly welcome to, but it's perceived as disrespectful to use this site as a gateway to draw attention to your stuff posted elsewhere.
Anyone who has not been sniffed out and zotted by humblegunner is O.K.
Iv'e often wondered what became of OWK.Pinging some who may know.
Not sure an "evangelical young earth" type fella would be that enamoured with the likes of OWK though.8)
There are many great intellects here and many differing viewpoints. It's sometimes difficult to know who's right and who's not.Like anywhere else it'll be the spirit of the poster that will help you determine which way you lean.Enjoy.
Yep, and thats pretty much all someone needs to know.
Some FReepers do have blogs. I have one I never update. heh. I still use its blogroll though.
That information is great. You all have really started me on the right track. Thanks for the history lesson on FR also Joe 6-pack.
Blush blush - I actually do have a blog but I haven’t done anything on it for a long time.
I don’t belong in the list!
THREE ten year old boys - wowzers!
I think the poster mistakenly listed other good posters, not necessarily bloggers.
It is common these days to mistake posting for blogging.
Common and ignorant.
Btw, welcome to FR.
Thank you, and I look forward to meeting many new friends.
So, not all those freepers have blogs?
So humblegunner? when you thought out a good answer for my questions,m please alert me to it. I really do want to know who the good Freeper bloggers are to follow. I find the knowledge at FR to be of very high quality, and the opinions expressed here to be very good.
That being said, I do understand that many former members of FR have gone on to great things in the new world of media and that they are fighting the good fight. I really do want to support them.
I will be here, to join right after Church.
I forgot to mention that the current link is always posted in the “Breaking News” sidebar.
Well frankly the first question I must ask is why you think
it needful to limit yourself to FReepers who have blogs.
The content and the commentary right here on FR is by far
superior to that of any blog. Those FReepers who have blogs
will invariably subject us to them right here. In full or in part.
Far better content, on average, is available on the main forum.
Following only blogs seems quite limiting and narrow of scope.
Is there a particular reason you are interested in following the blogs
written by FReepers as opposed to participating in FRee Republic itself?
Oh I don’t only want to follow freeper blogs. I follow many conservative Christian and conservative political blogs. It’s just that I have read a lot of different things by freepers and I am wanting to expand my base of knowledge, but also would like to support those who are treating FR with the respect it deserves.
That is why those who are considered good bloggers I will give hits to and follow. Those who are considered blog pimps that are only want to use FR top draw people away to their site for the sake of hits I will ignore.
It will save me from needlessly wasting my time.
Another thing. I am very heavily involved in my church. So I have limited time to do much more than read. When and if I have time to converse with others, like today, I will.
Who knows what the future will bring? For now I am in the information gathering mode.
I hope that answers your question. If not I will try to elaborate some more.
