Do any FReepers have experience with adverse side effects of malarial preventive meds ??
Our daughter is returning from a Central American country after arriving a week ago for a 6 week student exchange program. We received information thru their network that she was behaving abnormally, itching, depression, not bathing...
We thought it was a bad case of homesickness. Then my wife spoke with her and realized it was not our normally happy daughter. She said she was not homesick, but felt depressed, no laughing past 4 days, lost feeling in parts of her body, thoughts about harming herself.
The program is putting her on a plane back to us Sunday. We called the pharmacist and she confirmed that malarial meds can cause those side effects. She was prescribed Chloroquine .
Any FReeper experiences with this would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou - urtax$@work
Yes ....'something' is wrong and we have planned for the above mentioned medical help.
My experience is this...
They tell you to take Chloroquine with a full stomach - but they should really tell you TO BE SURE TO TAKE IT WITH A FULL STOMACH!!!
I took one without eating once....... just once.
After that I could hardly take them at all - they made me SO SICK.
Take her to a specialized facility such as a university medical center. Have all of her medical and travel history available for the doctors.
If after a month you aren't confident the university doctors are on the right path, take her to Mayo Clinic. You may be pleasantly surprized that the bill at Mayo turns out to be less what your local doctor would charge.
Prayers for you all. All of the good intentions here are no substitute for a doctor seeing your child in person.
