The dern coccoon is more stunningly beautiful than the flippin butterfly. I used to collect them as a kid and watch them open in my bedroom.
The newly-hatched butterflies crawl out all wet and wobbly and kinda stuck together--looking like a shiny, black miniature horror monster. Then you have to place them in direct sunlight (they won't hatch if the day is overcast or rainy!).
They hang feebly on the empty chrysalis-husk and they slowly start to move their wings. As the wings dry and expand, the motions become faster and more well-coordinated, speeding up and speeding up until...
... it just flies away.
Truly a religious experience. One of many from my youth.
