In this Paul Revere thing, weve got Palin, who probably made a verbal slip that turns out to be true, or possibly knew an obscure part of Reveres memoirs of the event, but in the mean time is shaping the national conversation about most of the major political issues today, and doing it with a Facebook page and an apparently supernatural ability to manipulate the media to her advantage, now that shes no longer being handled by professionals. Conclusion: what a dope.
In the other corner, weve got Obamas 57 states thing, which was actually another plausible slip (I think he actually meant 47 states) that was still in no way true. Conclusion: its just a slip.
Ill remind you of Barry Goldwater, the thoughtless stupid ideologue who set a lot of the Conservative movement in motion;
Jerry Ford, the stupid clumsy oaf who was a football star, who graduated in the top 25 percent at Yale Law School while coaching football full time, and was known to be supremely athletic, continuing to ski well into old age;
and Ronald Reagan, the mere actor who was president of SAG, two-term Governor of California, two-term President of the United States, and who even liberal historian Doug (son of David) Brinkley now admits was a brilliant and well-read man.
And Id suggest that anyone who thinks Sarah Palin is stupid should never, never ever, take the other side of a bar bet with her.
I listened to that clip, and she DID sound, ummm, misinformed.
But I would NEVER bet against her.
I bet she plays a mean game of Uno. ;-)
I’d play Uno with her anytime.
What fun on a camping trip!
We could play Naughty Librarian too....
Sarah educated half the country with her version beyond “the british are coming”. Paul revere had a gun to his head, warned brits of 500 patriots. Also the bells ringing, gunfire, brings much more to the story.
She made one small mistake; besides, what a hateful editorial towards her. This is why the US is getting so many problems adding up is because of attitudes like this. this constant carping and complaining and sniping.
What did she say about Paul Revere?
That he warned the British that the American militias knew they were coming while detained by a party of their officers. Which is factually correct, but not a part of the 19th Century poem that everyone thinks is the whole story.
Actually, she is correct. See my last post.
Hmmmm....Blotto posted this...
Wrong? Ooooooops .The defining scholarly book on the topic is Paul Reveres Ride by the Brandeis historian David Hackett Fischer. Go to the Google books link .click on contents select The First Shot [Ed: embedded the link]
Mitchell repeated Paul Reveres warning that 500 New England men were mustering in Lexington. He told of the alarm bells and signal guns, and the volley of musket-fire near the Green .Others also remembered with vivid clarity this electrifying instant when they halted on the road, and Paul Reveres warning reached them through the mouth of this highly excited captor, Major Mitchell.
This is a hard act to follow. I know Palin's heart is in the right place. I don't know how well read she is about history or our country or how ready she is to negotiate through the minefields that are set before her. I pray she'll succeed.
I would add that when she said that Paul Revere rang the bells, she obviously didn’t mean that he jumped down off his horse, ran up into every steeple, and rang the bells himself. No, he gave the agreed on warning, and the people he warned rang the bells.
The simple way of saying that is that Paul Revere rang the bells. He was responsible for ringing them because he was responsible for spreading the warning that the bells signalled.
Good grief. There’s simply no excuse for 57 states, or “I don’t speak Austrian,” or thinking it’s still 2008.
And who is it that said he visited all but one of the 57 states???
She won huge concessions from the major energy companies in Alaska. Does that give you any idea what she is capable of?
I wish the Bushes weren’t such @$$holes about Sarah. It renders me unable to like or respect them anymore.
They and I don’t like Perry, either, yet Sarah likes Perry.
I detest McCain, Sarah loves him.
One of the (lesser) reasons I like Cain so much is he isn’t part of this childish rivalry/alliance carp.
why is it so many Americans, especially those in media positions, have a complete lack of knowledge of American history? or even exhibit the most basic fact-checking before criticizing?
Why aren't the networks showing interviews with history professors stepping up front to confirm the capture and interrogation of Revere by British Regulars actually DID happen?
(Sarah consistently demonstrates that the media is not only biased against hetero women, but downright dishonest when it comes to covering their own hysterical rants)
But that would ruin the “she’s a #@%-^&$# idiot” meme they’ve built up since her 2008 speeches and rallies scared them so.
Reagan's enemies called his campaign "Bedtime for Bonzo." They didn't realize this guy in many ways knew more then they did. I guess I'm wondering out loud about how much she knows, how well read she is. I know she's got the guts and I think she's smart and capable. I'm talking about something a bit different that that. Either way, I want her to win.
