I was in the sixth grade when the Duke died. I remember learning he was gone standing out in the hall changing classes.

A co-worker of mine is in Winterset now, having driven all the way from Western PA to attend the annual birthday celebration. It’s a really big deal.

A great American patriot. Bet he and Ronaldus Magnus always get together in Heaven—with Bill Buckley—to celebrate each others’ birthdays.

Thank you so much for posting this. Two weeks ago a freeper posted a comment that said: What would John Wayne think of today’s world? This led to so many freepers hating on the Duke. I was the only one (with one or two exceptions) to praise his courage, talent and political history. It was one of the most depressing days in my many years on FR. (You can check my posts to find out what went on that day.)
God bless you and the Duke.

Cool.
I started to watch "Red River" last evening... will finish watching this evening.
I wish movies these days were not so PC... director/producer Howard Hawkes' is spot on in the movie... showing John Wayne kicking a$$ and taking names.

Happy Birthday Duke. May God be with you.
They don’t make Americans like him anymore. Wish they did.
He wouldn’t keep his mouth shut about the liberal pukes ruining this country. He’d kick the a$$es of the liberals in hollyweird too.
I live in Des Moines about 30 miles from Winterset. I might have to make the drive down for his birthday.

I was watching a interview with Glen Campbell recently and he was asked about working with John Wayne on “True Grit.” Glen responded:”There was NO B.S. in John Wayne! If he says this weighs three pounds,it weighs three pounds! Wrap it up.” He stated he got the role in “True Grit” because the Dukes daughter liked him from his weekly TV show.

Born in my dad’s hometown, the Duke weighed 14 lbs at birth. How would you like to give birth to that?
