Twenty years after "Tailhook '91," the woman who "sank" the Navy, still plays "victim" as she counts the millions of dollars she scored from a series of lucrative lawsuits.

Former LT Paula Coughlin, who destroyed the careers of innocent men and falsely picked out "attackers" from a photo lineup composed of military members who weren't even in Las Vegas at the convention, is now married, a "yoga instructor" and living in Atlantic Beach, Fla. She did all right for herself, cleaning up $5.4 million from the Tailhook Assn. and Hilton Hotels Corporation

The hard-eyed, 50 year-old onetime chopper pilot is Mrs. Joe Puopolo today.

Recently this ex-poster girl for political correctness resurfaced in a "puff-piece" article in the usually responsible Wall Street JOURNAL. Unfortunately, the writer had an agenda to make her look like some sort of heroine. Either no real research was done, or the journalist was just plain lazy. Maybe both.

The facts are there, if you look for them.

COUGHLIN NO "REBECCA FROM SUNNYBROOK FARM"

"Victimized" Paula even offended a fellow female officer at Tailhook when she was seen having her legs shaved while wearing a Navy white uniform. "I couldn't believe she would do such a disrespectful thing," the woman witness said.

But she didn't see "The Paulster" at an earlier function when Coughlin wore fishnet stockings and a giant dildo. Does that sound like "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm?"

The folks who write the adoring articles in the mainstream media never mention Coughlin was caught not once, but twice, falsely identifying "perps" from a military police lineup. The FACT is, enlisted Marines from Quantico were included in those lineups, and who do you think poor Paula picked. "Yeah, he's the one. If he isn't, he's the guy's brother," she said. Wrong.

After the second misidentification of "ringers," Naval investigators should have seen the warning signs that maybe all was not as the admiral's aide contended. But the witch-hunts continued unabated.

BUSH PANDERS FOR THE FEMINIST VOTE AND FAILS

It was former President George Bush, in the midst of a close race with Bill Clinton for the Presidency in 1992, who invited Paula Coughlin to the White House for tea with he and wife Barbara. What a keen photo opportunity that was! See how "concerned" the Republican and ex-Navy pilot is? Why, he even wept crocodile tears for the cameras. It still didn't get him enough votes. He lost the election.

Shame on Bush. As commander-in-chief, he was using the situation for partisan politics and at the same time grossly violating the rules about avoiding undue command influence. If the Navy brass at the Pentagon didn't know they needed scapegoats, and fast, after that disgusting performance, they did then.

Admirals shook in their shoes at the spectacle of the President of the United States, head of the nation's armed forces, publicly consoling a person whose accusations had yet to be substantiated in any court of law. It was the most blatant violation of prohibitions against "undue command influence" the Navy had ever seen.

"Perpetrators" would have to be found and officers court-martialed to quiet the storm of public outrage. If some innocent aviators got "caught up in the dragnet," so be it. Feminist politicians like Colorado's Rep. Patricia "crybaby" Schroeder would not let the brass off the hook until "heads" were served up, preferably on a silver platter.

A SHAMEFUL WITCH-HUNT - SCAPEGOATS MUST BE FOUND

What ensued was a frenzied "witch hunt" that would have made Joe McCarthy proud. Naval investigators employed tactics that made a mockery of not only the U.S. Constitution, but disregarded regulations - such as prohibitions against coercion - in the imperfect and flawed UCMJ. To the military investigators, "the end justified the means."

Officers were targeted by virtue of their rank, and subordinate officers encouraged to "rat them out" in order to save their own careers. Even if some officers were actually innocent, "lower-rankers" were urged to accuse them of impropriety anyway, in exchange for little or no punishment for themselves.

Before the scandal had run its course, nearly 1500 aviators would have their careers damaged - many were destroyed. At least one accused officer committed suicide. Secretary of the Navy H. Lawrence Garrett was forced to "walk the plank," as was the duplicitous former Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Frank Kelso.

OUR POSITION ON GENUINE SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Before we go any further, may we refer you to one of the longest investigative articles in this Web site's 11-year history? (See Related Stories below). Read our condemnation of genuine sexual harassment. Here is what we said (in part):

"In no way does the staff or management of MilitaryCorruption.com condone or excuse the disgraceful and outrageous behavior of many of the aviators who attended "Tailhook."

"The excessive drinking, foul language, crude behavior and disrespect shown towards women was and is reprehensible, and deserved to be punished under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)."

Does THAT sound like we are misogynistic knuckle-draggers? Those who would attack us - the messenger - for exposing what really happened at Tailhook and why, don't want unpleasant and inconvenient facts to get in the way.

ANOTHER FEMALE OFFICER MAKES FALSE ACCUSATIONS

Paula Coughlin wasn't the only female accuser at the Tailhook convention to have problems with the truth.

Another female pilot, then-LT j.g. Elizabeth Warnick, was a veteran of other Tailhook conventions. Witnesses testified the Naval Academy graduate was one of the women (like Paula) who had their legs shaved and happily provided "belly-shots" - liquor poured in their navel and then "lapped up" by more-than-willing male pilots.

Seeing how Coughlin had brought the Navy to its knees, Warnick decided to make some accusations of her own. Perhaps with dollar signs in her eyes, she claimed she had been "gang-raped" by several aviators. The charges were extremely serious and not only could have ended the pilots' careers, but certainly would have sent them to prison for a very long time. Warnick named her so-called "attackers," then settled back to see them punished.

The big problem for Warnick was, she was lying! She knew it, the pilots she had consensual sex with knew it, and worst of all for the female officer, color photographs surfaced (MilitaryCorruption.com has seen copies) showing Warnick, half-naked, wearing a skimpy "thong," her legs wrapped around the waist of a male aviator.

Finally, under repeated interrogations by investigators, Warnick admitted she had lied under oath. The lieutenant explained the false accusations by saying she was "engaged" to a boyfriend back home and didn't want him to think she was "cheating" on him at the raucous Tailhook convention. Thus, the fabricated story about her being "gang-raped."

Never mind what could have happened to the male pilots, Warnick was concerned only with concealing her own misconduct. After all, wasn't the Navy falling all over itself to accommodate Paula Coughlin? The lieutenant figured any "charges" she brought against men in such a "PC-atmosphere" wouldn't be questioned at all. But that was before the pictures came to light.

PAULA COUGHLIN - A NAME THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY

Paula Coughlin, AKA Puopolo, is a name that will live in infamy.

Her sanctimonious comment in the WSJ article - "I don't have a HATE LIST any more . . ." can best be answered by this: Well, baby, an awful lot of people in the Navy do have one, and guess what? You're right there at the top of the list.

Col Jessup of A FEW GOOD MEN had it right when he bellowed to Tom Cruise: "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!" An awful lot of folks in the Navy and media can't either.

Best of all, print out copies and distribute them under automobile windshield wipers in the parking lot, day-room tables, the latrine and mess hall, hand-to-hand, anywhere you can spread the word that we have Paula's number. And now, so do you.]

I saw the movie hollywood made about the scandal. It was truly disgusting. I wonder if Coughlin raked in any cash on that one too!

This was in a time when there was no internet and (Thank GOD for) FOX NEWS

This could not have happened today, which is why liberals are losing their minds.

We have to consider ourselves lucky Rush, Fox, and the Interweb are finally allowing us to see truth and exposing major presstitute bias

I am sure all of the women now in the Navy are Virgins of the highest order, and would never engage in such games with fellow officers.

I was in a helicopter squadron at the time.....I was an E-5 but the entire squadron had to go through a series of powerpoint presentations and various other briefs. We took at least two full days off to hear about how bad sexual harassment was, etc. The poor officers really got screwed because they ALL had to sign Page 13’s which followed them forever. In fact, my protocol officer at my current command was at Tailhook....a women and she said that Paula was all into the partying until I believe someone spoke to her about HER behavior and then she got PISSED OFF! (one of those how dare you speak to me type of deals) and that did it for her and she just went off.......(I am sure that is not exactly what happened) but I trust this officer in my command and believe it was pretty close after remember 20 years later. Anyway the Protocol Officer swears that she did not make it to upper ranks because of the Tailhook scandal and that pesky page 13.....she very well could be right. She did retire and did well but perhaps she would have made Captain or Admiral....one will never know.

I saw the uncensored report and photos at the Pentagon. No evidence that the women weren’t willing co-conspirators on that operation.

Discussion regarding left wing causes these days - hate crimes, gender bias, civil right abuses - should begin from the premise that every one of them are based upon lies, intentional deception and character assassination.

Follow the money.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

I’m equally sure that exactly the same judgement applies to every soul inside The Beltway at that time as well as today.

Might even apply to you.

I’m just another rotten old enlisted type, so I don’t have any morals to criticize.

I was stationed at Fort Eustis as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer at the time. I was a CW4 with 25 years service, and the entire flight detachment at Felker AAF (All CW4’s and a Lt. Col.) had to go through a series of slides, videos, powerpoint presentations and various other sexual harassment briefings from a vile, hate-filled civilian lady from Norfolk NAS. Because we were Aviators wearing flight suits, we were harassed and intimidated by this viscious woman. The senior leadership at Eustis and Monroe did nothing to stop or prevent the Tailhook scandal to overflow into the Army...we were guilty by association. I was seriously involved with the General’s 33 year-old daughter at the time, and her father, brothers and brother-in-law (all Army TC officers, non-rated) decided I was just as guilty as the Tailhook members...and my relationship with her ended. Paula Coughlin got rich on her lies...and the rest of us got screwed.

As many times as Poppy Bush had attended the intimes soirees at the Bohemian Grove, where the merry-makers annually incinerate in effigy their ordinary person's care for other human beings as part of their Feast of the Wilfully Hellbound, you'd think he'd have got past shedding tears for a mere person.

Makes me think more and more, as time goes by, that Clinton never deserved to win, but Poppy did deserve to lose.

If Ronald Reagan, failing in his powers as his second term ran out, omitted to do one thing for America, it was to make sure that George Herbert Walker Bush never darkened the White House door.

"What ensued was a frenzied "witch hunt" that would have made Joe McCarthy proud."

The author writes a piece decrying unfounded accusations and slandered reputations, but can't resist taking a cheap shot at Tailgunner Joe. I agree with the thesis that Tailhook was PC run amok and was exploited to no end by the so-called 'victim', but I sincerely wish he didn't feel the need to indulge in and perpetuate similar smears about another American veteran and patriot.
