As the violence intensifies in Syria, the Obama administration has finally done something to address the situation. President Obama signed an order pushing sanctions against Syria. However, the sanctions did not even target Bashar al-Assad, who is leading the violent attacks. The Obama administration's policy in the Middle East has been cautious and unacceptable.
Today, Syrian security forces have killed 42 demonstrators in Daraa using tear gas and bullets. So far, over 500 people have been killed in Syria. In other news, 200 members of the ruling Baath party resigned from the Syrian government and the Muslim Brotherhood called on Syrians to demand the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. Based on my recent post, I wrote about how we need to be careful who we support. Like Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood is involved in Syria. The Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization that wants to establish Sharia law and has connections to Hamas. This makes the situation more difficult for the United States. The good news is that the Muslim Brotherhood does not have enough power in Syria to form a new government because Assad has forced them out of the region. We are wasting an opportunity to help the Syrian people overthrow an authoritarian regime that is in lockstep with Iran and terrorist groups.
The leadership role of the United States in the world is in decline because we have a president who likes to punt on the issue. Why is there no one in Congress standing up to the president's inactions? Why is there no potential presidential candidate ripping Obama over the way he is handling the Middle East? One word: politics, politics, politics. No one cares that innocent people are being slaughtered by an authoritarian regime that has a history of human rights violations. When will someone speak out about this?
Must’ve been painful for the POTUS to have to order sanctions against an ally.
What--a complete ban on Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, and Pita Bread?
Leave these people alone and let them solve their own problems.
No matter who wins that side is our enemy. They don’t want us there. Grant their wish’s
It would be better for our interests to have a more democratic government in Syria, one that opposes Iran. And you make a good point, if they do not want us there, then we shouldn’t be involved but we do not have the answer to that question yet.
The Syrians revolting need to shout death to the US and death to Israel before the DC King will even lift a finger for them.
