It pays to be a lesbian mom in Park Slope - at least at Boing Boing, a maternity and breastfeeding store that offers a special discount exclusively for same-sex moms. These moms get an additional 10% off their total purchase at the store, located on the corner of 6th Ave. and Union St.
The store's owner, Karen Paperno, told the News she's been offering the discount for about three months.
"It's not politically correct," Paperno acknowledges with a laugh, "but neither am I. Never have been, never will be. This is my store, and I can choose to do this discount for the people who need it most."

“the people who need it most”
“lesbian women minorities hardest hit” huh. What a pile of steaming manure.
It’s her store she can do what she wants.
Actually Ms Papaerno, granting special and privileged status to those who flaunt their sexual deviance IS politically correct. So your little stunt of granting a discount to openly lesbo parents is a stellar example of political correctness.
But how do they PROVE they're lesbians?
How do THESE TWO prove they're WOMEN????
She’s quite right - it is her store to do with as she pleases. It is also the shopper’s privilege to shop where he or she pleases. Seems a boycott might be in order.
What would happen if I ran a store where I gave straight people discounts not available to homosexuals?
You are absolutely correct. She can do whatever she wants. I wonder how she verifies that they are lesbo parents. Maybe they give a little sapphic demo to qualify for the discount.
Of course she simply demonstrates her complete ignorance when she claims that it isn’t “politically correct” and that she is just helping out “those who need it most” with her special privileges for the same-sex couples.
Although I may disagree with her 'social' views, I agree with you.
As far as deciding 'how' and 'to whom' to offer discounts, she is free to do whatever she wants.
If NOT, then this is no longer AMERICA.
I’ll raise prices in my store for my GAY and lesbian customers!!
I don't believe or accept that the setting of discounts in a private business is tantamount to 'special and privileged STATUS'.
Is that because they usually have more money?
I agree with you. If they gave discounts only to all straight people, you can bet there would be lawsuits flying all over the place.
It’s her store~!! Good luck with that.
Number of Lesbiam Mom customers (real) 1 or 2
Number of turned-off REAL customers who will shop elsewhere when they find they are not going to get the same 10% off that she gives to lesbians... hundreds
(1) YEP. FFFFF ... REEDOM!
(2) Also: It’s irresponsible. But FREEDOM includes the allowance to be irresponsible — to a point. Such an irresponsible discount is not close to any such point.
(3) Freedom also means the neighbors and clients have every permission and allowance to speak out against her action in public areas in close proximity to her store. Subject only to the local customs on public order and decorum.
Please do not show any pictures! This is the equivalent of showing a small child blown to pieces by a roadside bomb. Actually this is even worse.
The bow in that photo will experience the worst fate imaginable.

If you grant a discount to one group of people that is not granted to another group of people, that is special or privileged status.
Some business grant special discounts (status) to senior citizens, or military veterans, or current military, or students, or people with a particular certification or whatever. In each case, it is a special or privileged status for a particular group that is not extended to the general public. You can believe or accept it, or not; your assent or belief is immaterial to the fact that it is a special and privileged status.
OK, your 1 and 3 make perfect sense.
Trying to figure out what your source of authority is for 2.
