The Sunshine Patriot: When it becomes personal
Conservative Hideout ^ | 4-14-11 | John Carey

How many of you know conservatives or people who claim they want to do the necessary things to save the republic? They spout off about reining in the government and cutting spending. They demand entitlement reform and a government that functions within the scope of its constitutional parameters. They slam politicians who tax and spend and wave Gadsden Flags to show their patriotic spirit. Yes that’s right they talk the talk that is until it becomes personal or in some way impacts them. These are the modern day “sunshine patriots” that Thomas Paine spoke of back during that difficult winter of 1776.

According to some callers to talk radio, a lot of the cops and firemen have gone over to Barry’s Dark Side because of the way Republicans have been treating their union thug bosses.

According to some callers to talk radio

Seminar Callers, trained to use catch phrases and defend "the Nothing (Zero)".

And you believe union members were republicans before they were Obama supporters?

Some of them claim they were and even supported the TEA Party but you may be right. They’ve probably always been ‘RATS.

We see this all the time right here:

"Don't touch Social Security! I paid into it! I want what they owe me!"
"Don't touch Medicare! My wife has a medical condition!"
"Don't touch government union jobs! My brother-in-law is a cop!"

I want government to be a lot smaller. I stand a good chance of suffering if that happens; it would personally affect me. I say Bring it on. I'm not afraid of change, of suffering, or death. I know what is right, and I will embrace it no matter the cost.

I doubt it’s too many, and if some did, they were never really on our side anyway.

I think the seminar caller explanation is closer to the truth.

I’m in the same boat. It might impact me. In fact, that’s a probability. But, what right is right.

All that is a pipe-dream. You want to control entitlements? Ain’t gonna happen. We were doomed when Wickard vs. Filburn was decided, erasing any relevant boundaries that the constitution may have originally placed on congress. Both Dems and Repubs abusively take advantage of that decision and will continue to do so.

Decisions will continue to be based solely on “how will this make me look and how will it affect my re-election chances?”. We* no longer elect patriots who will fall on their sword (election-wise) to do the right thing. We* elect the candidate who we hope will fill our outstretched hands -and- they will continue to grease our self-centered palms to stay in office.

*I’m speaking generally as in, “probably more than half the voting population. Probably significantly more.”

Or when they are faced with a choice of a constitutionalist, pro-life, genuine conservative republican nominee for senator they vote for lisa murkowski (write in candidate) because she can bring home the bacon. I saw it happen first hand in Alaska and it has reshaped the whole of my thinking about the republican party. I know personally people who are rabid pro-life, home school, republican anti-obama etc who went all in for murkowski. AK is lost I am afraid.
