Exactly! Back in those days you had to have reached the age where you could legally work - usually around 16, before you could get a Social Security number. This is one way employers could prove they were abiding by the Child Labor laws.

Not true, My parents got our SS#’s right away. My brother was born in ‘65 and i was born in ‘67. He has an Ohio SS# and I have a Michigan SS# because my parents lived in MI from ‘66-68. They just didn't automatically issue a SS# at birth, the parents had to ask.
That being said. Obama would have had to have an SS# very early in life. His mother ran him around the World. He was in Indonesia before he was five and would have needed a passport.

Exactly. I remember when my boys were little, in the early 1980s it was a NEW THING to get them for babies. Until then you didn’t get them until you were going to get a JOB and as far as I know YOU went down to get it. I know my Dad took my brother and I to get ours. I remember doing it, I was 17.

I know I got my SS number in the 60s when I was a teen and started working
I got my infant daughter a SS number in 1980 to open a UGMA.
