Leo Rosten in The Joys of Yiddish defines chutzpah as “gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, incredible ‘guts,’ presumption plus arrogance such as no other word and no other language can do justice to.” In this sense, chutzpah expresses both strong disapproval and a grudging admiration. In the same work, Rosten also defined the term as “that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan.“
Perhaps we need a similar word for what David Ploufe , a senior White House aide said about real estate tycoon and prospective GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump “displaying “sideshow behavior” in questioning President Barack Obama’s American birth and respect for the Constitution.”
WHAT??? For three years Obama has refused to cough up a long form birth certificate and end once and for all questions about his place of birth. The only document Obama has provided was a short form birth certifcate which he gave, not to the PUBLIC, but to a special group who put a PICTURE of it on the Internet. Perhaps Obama should never have been challenged on this. Perhaps it is a legitimate document, and people should never have questioned it.
But the simple reality is, that people were expecting the long form version, and when they were given the Reader’s Digest Condensed Book version, the questions persisted. At some point, Obama should have resolved this extremely divisive issue. Three years has been way too long to piddle.
Now, like Rosten’s Defendant above, Obama begs for mercy for the very thing he alone has had the power to resolve for three years. The Chutzpah!!!
But Ploufe is right about one thing. The Birther Question has been a three ring circus. And Obama is the Ringmaster.
