According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JoAnne_Kloppenburg ), Joanne Kloppenburg was born Joanne Fishman in Avon, Connecticut.

Joelle Fishman, who is older than Kloppenburg, has been in Connecticut for decades, and is the Chairman of the Connecticut Communist Party USA.

Somewhat. Whitepages lists about 100 in CT.
My own surname is uncommon outside of CT, but there are more by my surname name in CT than Fishman ... and we all share a common ancestor from 110 years ago.
The similarity between JOELLE and JOANNE and relative closeness of age tells me that this is worth checking out. It may be nothing. It'd be nice to know.

There's a J Fishman(or maybe even 2 or 3 of them) listed in Delavan WI.

This is the place designated WORLD CIRCUS CAPITAL. They had about 2 dozen circuses quartered here.

So, a Fishman, with a J, working with a circus as.......... well, that'd probably be a Scottish or Jewish "Fishman" almost for certain.

I've ploughed the fields of the circus culture trying to find a relative or two and it's not easy ~ even though a Great Uncle was first the treasurer/bursar/accountant for Cole Brothers, and then became the owner of that organization (which continues on to a degree as a division within Ringling).

Let me guess the Fishman family in Connecticut (or New York at an earlier period) had a relative that ran off with the circus. That would result in a Fishman family in Wisconsin ~ and later internal immigration in America usually entails someone moving to where they have relatives ~ it helps out in a new start ~ so you are on the right trail, but Joelle man well not be that close a relative of Joanne. Could be she's closer to J Fishman in Wisconsin and might not even have an idea who Joelle is. Frankly, I don't begin to know my first cousin's kids and there's well over a hundred of them ~ the Fishman family appears to have been as prolific.

I did some searching. While JoAnne (Fishman) Kloppenburg’s father is Elihu Fishman, Joelle’s is named George. Joelle stated that she came from a political family.

There is an earlier Elihu. These Fishmans would be (Ukrainian) Jewish, not Scottish. My guess with Kloppenburg is that her time in Yale and Princeton led to networking with lefties in Madison.

This must be a family of some notoriety, as Morris Sweetkind, a teacher at my old CT prep school, actually wrote of the town Ukrainian Abraham Fishman emigrated from.

BTW, my own roots go to Connecticut, but I am presently near the Wisconsin border in Illinois, so I find this interesting all the way around.

Not that they would be "Scottish" Jews, but that they'd be Scottish circus owners or managers ~ and you get all sorts of names in that crowd.

The Fishman family is rather like the Abrams family ~ lots of 'em. Plus, they don't all live on Manhattan Island.

We went to a Cole Bros. circus at Rockford Metrocentre. Cute show, though substituting dogs for lions, while practical given the venue, just isn’t the same.

I suspect the CT Fishman clan is distinct from the WI variety. I could see someone entering the country with no last name taking it due to his occupation in the Old Country.

The name is not nearly so common back east, despite a sizable Jewish and Scottish population in CT. Kloppenburg stay in northeast well into adulthood.

"Fishman" also translates Takala, Finnish (and probably Estonian as well) for a person who fishes for a living, or who works with fish ~ maybe in the market as a resular thing.

There could well be numerous Jewish families with origins in a dozen countries, but all adopting the surname "Fishman".

Take a look at Joelle's various memberships ~ that one where she's on the board of the Alliance for Retired Americans is a good example.

I looked them up. It has had members on the board who represented the interests of a variety of unions ~ particularly the public unions.

The link is not directly through the Communist Party but through their running dog lackeys like AFSCME!

When Kloppenburg and Fishman get together they probably have a good laugh about the shared virginal surname ~ and have the slightest idea about their relationships.

I looked up all their pictures on the net. These two ol'gals have NOTHING in common when it comes to facial features. With cracked brains, they got "common", but not the face.
