Lessons on gays’ contributions spark fresh controversy

New state legislation that seeks to ensure the accomplishments of gays are accurately reflected in California’s classrooms is causing fresh controversy here in Alameda, where the school district’s efforts to put anti-gay bullying lessons in place at elementary schools pitted local religious conservatives against gay-led families and their allies.

Last week, several Alameda residents told The Island they got an e-mail from a group called Committee to Change AUSD School District urging them to contact members of the state Senate’s Education Committee and request that they vote against SB 48, a bill from Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, that would add sexual orientation and religion to the list of characteristics that can’t be reflected adversely in instructional materials.

“If passed, it would force all teachers to virtually praise the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) and their lifestyles one-sidedly in all Kindergarten to Grade 12 classes for all subjects, against the beliefs and principles of the teachers, parents, and taxpayers in California!” the anonymous e-mail, which called the fight against the bill a “crucial battle,” says.

It says the group has “already lined up teachers and parents as plaintiffs” for a lawsuit to stop the bill if passed.

“But if we can stop them at the California Legislature, that would save us much money, time, and efforts. We also need to show them our determination and capability now,” it says.

One parent who forwarded the e-mail to The Island called it a “disturbing screed” filled with “hateful misinformation.” Others writing into the Alameda Parents Network e-mail list last week offered their opposition to the missive.

“How do these haters even feel like it’s OK to send this garbage out? How can we put pressure on these jerks to stop the madness?” one parent wrote in under the subject line, Bigotry in Alameda, It’s Time to Stop–No Tolerance for Intolerance.

Leno’s bill would add sexual orientation and religion to a list of characteristics that can’t be reflected adversely in California schools’ instructional materials and adds gays to the list of groups whose contributions must be reflected accurately in the classroom. Both are protections that several other groups of people currently enjoy.

“Current law requires that the historical contributions of traditionally underrepresented groups be included in instructional materials. The absence of any reference to the many important historical contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) Americans to the development of this state and nation is a powerful exception,” Leno wrote in explaining the purpose of the bill.

“The historically inaccurate exclusion of LGBT Americans in social sciences instruction as well as the spreading of negative stereotypes in school activities sustains an environment of discrimination and bias in schools throughout California. This is a primary obstacle to addressing California’s bullying epidemic that continues to plague a majority of LGBT youth,” he wrote.

A similar bill authored by former state Senator Sheila Kuehl was vetoed by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

School district leaders’ 2009 consideration and adoption of anti-gay bullying lessons for Alameda’s elementary school students sparked a battle between religious conservatives and others who opposed the lessons and gay parents and their supporters that drew national attention. Dubbed Lesson 9, the lessons’ opponents led unsuccessful lawsuits against them and an aborted recall drive against the three school board members who voted to adopt them.

The group that sent last week’s e-mail opposing Leno’s bill promoted two fresh candidates, James Pruitt and Lesson 9 opponent Clay Pollard, during the most recent school board election in November. Both lost.

The group’s website accuses school district leaders of mismanaging the district’s money.

Sean Cahill, a parent who worked to get Lesson 9 passed who also received the e-mail, will be offering his experiences with a Senate committee considering the bill on Tuesday. And he has asked other local supporters of the bill to join him.

“This is something that’s larger that Alameda,” Cahill said. “It’s important to have accurate information and to share what happened here.”

The sad thing is that this isn't an April fools joke.

What about the contributions of religious leaders? Evangelical Christians? Catholics? I know if you have a sexual hangup then everyone has to make you feel loved and appreciated. I think this is crazy. I'd never want to be identified for my sexual peculiarities or lack thereof. If a person's accomplishments don't deserve praise regardless of their sexual attributes then they don't deserve to be lifted up in a classroom. This shows the priorities of politicians where kids are barely getting an education and schools barely teach the glory of our founding or our founders while what they do teach on the contributions of religious figures usually is downplayed or taught from the perspective of conflict such as Galileo never allowing the students to be taught of the devotion of Copernicus, Keper, Newton, etc. They are using the schools as they have nearly unchallenged for the past 50 years as indoctrination camps.

The house is burning down and they are worried about the color of the drapes.

What contributions? Whenever I ask people what the homosexual movement has done to help anyone, all they can say is "They pay taxes."

Alan Turing is one. I’m not opposed to individuals who are homosexual listed in history books. I’m only opposed to the leftist idea that only one perspective can be applied and that is praise which is exactly what the purpose of this law is. It is to silence any opposing views either from teachers or students. It is to put a show on in the history books to help the little kids think growing up to be homosexual, transsexual, etc is a wonderful thing.

Alan Turing is one.

Since the dawn of man, you have....one.
Now let's talk about other famous homosexuals, shall we? Daumer (homosexual cannibal), Luis Alfredo Garavito (Gay serial killer who murdered over 140 boys), John Wayne Gacy [ 27 of his victims (young boys he seduced) were found buried in crawlspace under his house], Wayne Williams (Gay serial killer who preyed mostly on young black male hustlers.), and the list goes on and on and on.
Will they be teaching about these people as well? Their "contributions? Why not? Why the bias?

“these haters”

New talking points from liberals who want everything their way. If you aren't a bigot, homophobe, racist, you are now a ‘hater’.

Most are not so good that is true or contributed more to culture debasement. I did forget Rock Hudson but of course they should report that he was molested by an older boy when he was 9. That is my real problem. You would never get any of the real history where as these leftist always wish to report the fly in the ointment for those targets to which they are not aligned.

You forgot Dean Corll. We still do not know the full extent of his atrocities.

LOl. I really don't think he should be considered a great contributor to society. He was a Hollywood jester. There's been thousands of them. If they do use Hollywood anyway, I hope they remember to mention that he died from a homosexually transmitted disease, because this is one more death associated with this lifestyle.

If you were to ask many homosexuals to describe themselves truthfully, they start out “I am a gay...”

Their sexual preferences define them.

Yeah. I read about that guy. What kind of sick minds do these people have? He got away with his tortures for two years, and he even got a couple of young boys to help him!
Sure. Teach this "gay" and "normal" crap to the nations kids. That should make the world a better place - NOT.

Oh, and another one from Texas. Elmer Wayne Henley. He also kidnapped and tortured young boys for 13 years.
People have no idea how many boys have died at the hands of crazed homosexuals. People need to start paying attention. There's nothing "normal" or "just like us" in this picture.

Just what have they done, indeed.

Whatver it was had nothing to do with being homosexual.

These people are disgusting.

Charming.

They ALL have sick minds. Everyone of them.

While they would argue their minds are a reuslt of the stigma and oppression, I say its the other way round: their illness has warped their minds making them alien to “normal” people.

TRUTH has to be the forefront of all that is taught!!!! It is the purpose of education (used to be before Dewey) —to get to the truth. So any discussion of homosexuals need to have the following:

Most of the serial killers are homosexuals. Gacy, Dahmers, etc.

They should include Hitler’s henchmen—all the SA Brownshirts were homosexuals (Pink Swastika).

All major religions know that homosexual behavior is intrinsically disordered. There is no gay gene....it is a learned behavior...like in Afghanistan where the homosexual culture hates women and sodomize stables of boys and those boys grow up to do the exact same thing that they learned. (thousands of years activity.)

If they claim the Greeks...like Alexander the Great they must claim the fact that he was sodomized as a boy and that that was common for the boys to be seduced and courted and sodomized (as passive partners) in those pagan societies. It is why the Jews were so reviled.....they thought the pagan sexual practices were evil.

It is learned. That is why they are forcing this “sex ed” and “bullying” programs into the schools and DADT in military. To normalize and breakdown the moral aspects of the act so the Greek ideal is again “normal” although our country was based on Natural Law Theory and God’s Laws which is referenced in our Founding documents.

Why the bias?

I guess they can study all the homicidal heterosexuals too. /s

Seriously, though, the problem is doing this is settling on who was gay historically. For every Philip II and Richard the Lionheart there's a James Buchanan and William Rufus de Vane King.

A coalition has taken over California government. The Pervert portion of that coalition are now laying down the law as to what the children of others will learn. Perverts are among the bright ones, the happy ones, the glorious ones, they who make the law. By the way mentally name the others who dictate whom your children shall revere as “making a contribution.” As the Gaul said to the Roman, “Woe to the Conquered.”
