The liberal answer is that the only way this could be possible is that this is an individual of dubious character, on the take, and being paid off handsomely by conservative powers that be.

After all, in the liberal mindset, the government plantation, carefully grown and nurtured by liberals over these years, supposedly on behalf of our unfortunate "have-nots", should be the natural home for anyone of modest background and no inheritance."

This is my progressive brother's exact argument for why he thinks I'm wrong-headed and deluded about being a conservative. Like all Western leftists, he has failed to actually observe the effects of unbridled leftist policies on nations and cultures where it has been tried.

He also fails to note how many former Communist/Socialist nations have thrown those destructive doctrines overboard, and are now adopting systems more in alignment with our system of free enterprise and constitutional democracy.

If he were to ever have the realization that he's only playing at being a victim, he'd have to admit that he really is responsible for his own condition in life, and that the very foundations of his political beliefs are a complete pack of lies.

It would be a very bitter pill to swallow at his age, and I don't think he ever will. He'd rather go to his grave, insisting that the lie is the truth.

It's usually couched in more multisyllabic terms but that's essentially it. The common premise is that individuals only count as members of a class and that those who vote outside class interests are idiots or traitors. There is, of course, an exemption granted for those who transcend class by being a properly enlightened socialist. Not for the rest of us, however.

The result is the bit of cant we see above: no one but an oppressor or a dupe can be a conservative because to do so is to attempt to protect the current system of class oppression. Conservatives, therefore, are properly only white, moneyed, and powerful, and any conservative who is not, is simply stupid. They really believe this.
