Genesis had two or three distinct phases. Which one do you mean?
- Original lineup with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett
- Minus Peter Gabriel
- Minus Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett (this was when they got really popular and had most of their success, but the music was formulaic and boring IMHO)
Always figured them second to the Allman Brothers, but Skynyrd seems to get the press.
Most of these types of bands, that transition from having a large underground/cult following for years, THEN hit it big were still pretty good at the beginning of their “popular” phase - maybe the first album or two. THEN they start to suck.
Genesis fits this...as does Metallica, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Jefferson Starship (I consider them separate from Airplane) etc....
And Then There Were Three...., Duke and Abacab were still pretty good, but then after that they became Phil's backup band.
But their first post-Gabriel albums, A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, were masterpieces.
And "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is the best of them all, it was the perfect end to the Gabriel era.
