Ghaddafi Goes All In

The rebel stronghold of Benghazi is under attack from the south, the west, and the sea. Extensive shelling is reported in the western part of the city, and tanks are moving into the suburbs. Panicking civilians are fleeing east as rebel leaders demand immediate international intervention. A rebel fighter jet has been shot down over the city, possibly by friendly fire.

Gaddafi spokesman read two open letters, one addressed to Obama the other directed to Ban Ki Moon, Sarkozy and Cameron. Both defended Libya’s right to defend itself from what he described as terrorists, but the letter to Obama was much more conciliatory calling Obama “brother” and “a son”, in the second letter Gaddafi was much more defiant, calling any intervention illegal and threatening consequences. Gaddafi is probably trying to drive a wedge between the US and Europe.

I am not a military expert by any stretch, but the strategy seems obvious here. Gaddafi is using a WWII Soviet tactic from the battle of Stalingrad called “The Russian Bear Hug”. When faced with overwhelming Nazi firepower from artillery and the air, the Russians moved their trenches right up to the German front lines, forcing the Germans to risk bombing their own when they attacked Russian positions. If Gaddafi manages to move his forces into Benghazi before they are destroyed by coalition air power, it will be very difficult to preform tactical strikes amidst the chaos of urban warfare. Under such conditions pilots will have a hard time distinguishing friend from foe, have trouble avoiding massive civilian casualties, and risk being shot down by both government and rebel forces.

Since in our infinite wisdom we made this war our own, the US must act NOW to stop Ghaddafi forces before they are entrenched in Benghazi.

Not our fight, we should stay out of it.

Agreed. Are you sure we didn’t have anything to do with the uprisings in the Middle East though?

And meanwhile, the most pressing thing on Obammie’s mind is.....”should I use a 8 or a 9 on this shot?” and “who’s playing tonight in the tournament?”

.
Are you serious?

What the Russians did at Stalingrad took HUGE, HUGE BALLS, that even the Waffen SS lacked. It also took awesome leadership.

Daffy and his people lack both.

IOWs; only ground forces can protect the little people now.

Your move, again, 0bambi!

He has made it our fight.

Let's see did he orchestrate 9/11, No.

Has he attacked any US interests, since 1986? No. (Those acts were already 'paid in full')

Does he have WMDs? No.

So why is it our fight, again?

“Since in our infinite wisdom we made this war our own, the US must act NOW to stop Ghaddafi forces before they are entrenched in Benghazi.”

Or, we could just let France do the bombing. I’m getting less and less enthralled by the “we did something stupid; so let’s go sacrifice some soldier’s lives.” rationale.

I didn't say he (I noticed you didn't mention the Lockerby Scottland deal, but that's OK). I was just pointing out the obvious.

No, we need to stop him before he gets the idea to take out a passenger airliner. Wait he already has that idea.
Perhaps he will get the idea to target oil pipe lines in
Saudi Arabia or Mexico.

Frankly, I liked it better when Obama was dithering over what to do. I just wished that he wasn’t dithering about.

I think that we should make a firm statement that we are no longer going to take sides in the affairs of the Middle East and that we are cutting off foreign aid to all countries except Israel, who is our only true ally in the M.E.

All I know is under Bush, Kadaffy was under control, and he kept the oil flowing.

Fine. Pull all US troops and equipment out of europe and redeploy them to Libya. Prolly a better use of those assets anyway.

If we send in the Marines to Libya, it’s going to be bloody.

Actually my comment was meant as a joke.

As far as Libya, I say let them fight their own civil war, we should stay the hell out of it, imo.
