Exploiting the battle between the governor and public employees in Wisconsin, frequent White House visitor, AFL-CIO Chief Richard Trumka has been trying to resuscitate a critically ill labor movement by setting up the entire conservative movement as the “enemy.” Trumka argues that the $14+ trillion dollar deficit is no big deal and that the GOP is trying to take money away from the middle class, only give it to those rich Wall Street CEOs.
As Trumka’s participation in the public workers’ union protests grew, so did the number of incidents of union violence and thuggery associated with the them. This is not to say that the Grand Poobah of the union movement had anything to do with the violence, but it does seem to follow him around. His inflammatory rhetoric led to bloodshed and death during his reign as president of the United Mine Workers Union.
The AFL-CIO demagogue’s behavior was not unusual; the history of the labor movement is littered with extremists who have used violence to get their their way. At this moment, it is fair to say that union violence/thuggery has gone full circle. At the beginning of the movement the violence was outer directed; toward the government, management, or the police who were using violence themselves to destroy the labor movement. As the movement matured the violence became directed inward, targeted towards keeping the rank and file “in line,” going after replacement workers, or sabotaging the particular company under siege. Just like the fictional Johnny Friendly bullied Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) in “On The Waterfront” (see the image above) real life union bosses ruled with an iron fist. Most recently however, union thuggery/violence has become a political weapon; attacking members of the public who may disagree with the progressive-socialist politics championed by union management.

It's easy to be a mindless thug when you feel deep down that you are worthless and are filled with envy. This leads to anger and hatred of the good for being the good which leads to hostility and resentment against the achievers and the producers which leads to the desire to destroy them.

I have been on the receiving end of union thugs. I worked for the USPS as a letter carrier in northern Virginia. I was a member of the NALC, the union for city carriers. I made it known I didn’t think much of a union that protected lazy slugs that forced the rest of us to work more to carry their sorry butts. That afternoon when I went to my car in the employee lot, the side mirror was ripped off my Honda Accord. That wasn’t cheap to replace. The messgae was clear. So was the message I gave the next morning on the shop floor. I invited the ahole to step up and “discuss” the matter. No takers. Union cowardice-thuggery at it’s best.

On Friday, unions scored a temporary victory to maintain their ability to collect union dues from Wisconsin public employees when Judge Maryann Sumi (the same judge who refused to order striking teachers back to work in February) issued a Temporary Restraining Order preventing the implementation of Wisconsin’s new law governing public-sector unions.
Via the Wall Street Journal:
Judge Maryann Sumi said a lawsuit filed by the Dane County district attorney had enough merit for her to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent Secretary of State Doug La Follette from publishing the bill while she reviews the case.
This is a problem. Judge Maryann Sumi should have recused herself entirely from the Wisconsin battle due to her inability to be neutral in this case. You see, Maryann Sumi has a clear conflict of interest. Her son is a political operative who also happens to be a former lead field manager with the AFL-CIO and data manager for the SEIU State Council. Both the SEIU and the AFL-CIO have members who are public-sector employees in Wisconsin. In fact, as a federation, the AFL-CIO can boast of several member-unions that represent public-sector employees. Maryann Sumi is hardly an unbiased judge in the matter.
Jacob “Jake” Sinderbrand, Sumi’s son [see page nine here], runs a company called Left Field Strategies, a firm that works on political campaigns.
