Mortal threat

While briefing the US Senate Committee about Worldwide threats, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper was asked by Sen. Joe Manchin D-West Virginia on which country is the greatest threat to America. In Gen Clapper’s assessment was that Russia and China are the greatest threats. Their nuclear arsenals do pose a mortal threat to the U.S. mainland. However, the DNI did point out that the U.S. does have a Nuclear Treaty with Russia but not with China.

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty is an arms reduction treaty between the United States and Russia. Like it or not it is still in effect. The DNI doesn’t believe the Russians have no desire to have a nuclear exchange with us. According to Clapper “We have a treaty, the New START treaty, with the Russians. I guess I would rank them a little lower because we don’t have such a treaty with the Chinese.”

The Chinese have no desire to negotiate a treaty with the United States. China is building up its military capabilities and will not compromise in its development. In the last year the Chinese shot down their own satellite in an anti-satellite test, deployed aircraft carrier killer missiles, redirected internet traffic, and introduced and tested its own stealth fighter and ship. The Chinese are not slowing down.

“…..Carl Levin D-Michigan was surprised by Clapper’s blunt answer. The Senator was trying to get him to change his answer by insisting that North Korea or Iran are greater threats to our security.

The DNI pointed out that his assessment is based “strictly on the strategic nuclear capabilities of nation-states that have the potential to be mortal dangers to the U.S. and, “the two that come to mind because of their capabilities are Russia and China.”

One More Surprise....

Shhhhh. We’re supposed to think our biggest threat is Islam without a world class military anything. Besides China is a free trade permanent favorite trading partner. So what if they are building a blue water navy.

We can thank one BJ Klinton for the chicom threat. He exchanged missile and guidance technology to the Chinese in exchange for campaign contributions.

Exactly. I'll also add that I don't trust Putin. As odd as that may sound, I wouldn't put too much faith in the statement:

“We have a treaty, the New START treaty, with the Russians. I guess I would rank them a little lower because we don’t have such a treaty with the Chinese.”.

I would rank China higher not because of any misguided faith in a treaty; but simply for the reason that China appears to be much more healthier.
