These are Frank Hurleys famous early colour photographs of Sir Ernest Shackletons ill-fated Endurance voyage, as part of the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917. Hurley was the official photographer on the expedition.
Early in 1915, their ship Endurance became inexorably trapped in the Antarctic ice. Hurley managed to salvage the photographic plates by diving into mushy ice-water inside the sinking ship in October 1915. - State Library of New South Wales

Several years ago while exploring the cemetery at the US Naval Academy I noticed a large monument at the highest point of land in the park- it is a memorial to the lost naval crew of the Jeannette arctic exploraton mission.
I’d never heard about it.... What a story.
Check it out if you are interested in early explorers and feats of bravery and endurance

Actually, by this time most of the arctic and antarctic explorers had realized, particularly after the horrible failure of the Scott Expedition, that Eskimo-style clothing was far and away the best for such conditions.
Modern gear is lighter, but not really much more effective. So clothing wasn’t really much of an issue.
Other types of gear, such as climbing gear, radios, food, stoves, etc. you are quite right.

Bump for later reading.
Antarctica is tough even for today's scientists down there.

Curried rabbit? Thats different.
As a side note, there is a theory that too much lead in the solder in the canned goods for the Franklin expedition played a major role in its downfall.
