Back in 1963, I was stationed at a very small NATO base in Italy’s “bootheel,” near Brindisi. I got hurt playing flag football one afternoon. A kick in the shin resulted in a blood infection and the medics at the base clinic were going to medevac me to Wheelus AB. I was definitely up for that, a chance to visit Africa! But they were able to sort out the issue and I never got medevacked.

We were stationed in Brindisi (San Vito) in 1966-67..I was supposed to be medevac’d to Tripoli two weeks before the baby was due....He arrived early and I had the pleasure of going to Casale and being delivered by a midwife...
