One of the most spectacular astronomical events I witnessed was when Hale-Bopp was in the sky.
In March of 1997 I saw a near total lunar eclipse on one side of the sky with the Hale-Bopp comet on the other. In Idaho there isn’t that much light pollution so the show was simply fantastic.
Ten years ago seems about right, but I’m not absolutely certain. I have a great shot of Hale-Bopp over Pilot Mountain, a sort of unusual looking mountain standing well away from any others, a “monadnock.” Had the photo enlarged and framed, it’s on my fireplace mantle.
