This cyclone is now infinitely worse even than Hurricane Katrina in every respect. One link shows an overlay of this Cyclone over Continental U.S. and it covers virtually the whole of the U.S. There is also a link to live radio coverage from the affected area, now extending along a 1500 mile stretch of the Queensland Coastline. People have been told the time for evacuation has passed, and now they are on their own, and have been warned to lock themselves in their bathrooms, and bunker up, for what could be a day or two. Winds at the core are already in the vicinity of 200MPH. This deadly Cyclone is timed to hit at around 10PM local time.
Yes. Much of the area that was flooded is also the area that’s getting hit now. Not only that, the town of Innisfall-
nearly destroyed by Cyclone Larry not 6 years ago- is right in the path of Yasi, and Yasi is far more powerful than Larry was.
I am listening to ABC Radio in Australia via the Internet. The Premier of Queensland is giving press conferences every hour on the half-hour. In the last one, they mentioned they’ve received the first call from someone who waited until now to decide to evacuate. Problem is, they can send no one to help them...it’s too dangerous to go outside.
The winds near the eye are at approx. 180 mph. The main winds have NOT yet reached land. As of this post, they are still 2 hours away.
That is terrible news .
Hopefully there will not be much rain with this storm as with the ground already saturated it wouldn’t be good.
I’ve been through a lot of hurricanes . There is nothing anyone can physically do till it passes to aid anyone.
If you stay you just have to hunker down.
Sounds like Tully and nearby got the worst of it. Countryside stripped of vegetation, hospital damaged, roofs torn off.
From the earlier forecast maps I looked at, it appeared that Cairns would experience no more than ordinary stormy conditions (whew!).
