People love to hype 2012 as the end of the world. It's BS, but hey, when it gets into the public consciousness, things stick.
Anywho, a scientist named Brad Carter is predicting that the star Betelgeuse is expected to go super-nova very soon. If this happens, the sky that we look at could have two stars in it, even though Betelgeuse is 1,300 light years away. On the bright side, Carter assures us that we won't all die

They’ve been predicting this since I was in college 30 years ago. When they say “soon,” they mean in the next several million years.

How big is Betelguese?
Interesting explaination of just how big and how small things are in this universe. Takes a second or two to download but then use the sliding bar to zoom in or out.
The important thing is, one day, night will become day for several weeks on Earth.

So what use is he to Algore? He needs to be assuring us we are all dead unless we empty our wallets and throw the contents in gore’s direction.
The Old Man was in the process of being shored up with steel beams drilled into the side of the cliff. The whole ledge just collapsed before they were able to finish it. The destruction was pretty complete.
About that road construction, were they blasting? Guy I know used to live on a private lake and the home owners on the lake owned and maintained a small dam that controlled the water level. There was some road work going on on a nearby public road. The home owners (who were also dam owners) were leary about the contractor, so they instrumented the dam with accelerometers. They were able to show that the contractor was using several times the allowable charge and took him to court. The contractor was obliged to post a $1,000,000 insurance bond against any future failure of the dam.

Sorry they didn’t get on the Old Man shoring up project sooner. - Yeah, they were blasting on the main road beside the Old Stone Bridge when it collapsed. That was a beautiful bridge.
