It's been a bad week and frankly I don't really care that much about this weekend's games because my Eagles will be watching them on TV. Still you might care, so.
The Armageddon bowl, so called by the Ravens secondary, pits the Steelers against the Ravens. It's probably the best game of the weekend and it happens first, 4:30 PM ET Saturday on CBS. The Steelers are a 3½ point favorite and that seems about right to me. The Steelers are home and their QB is better.
At 8 PM ET Saturday on Fox the Packers visit the Falcons. The Falcons are only a 2½ point fave, which probably tells you something. Why does the NFL force the Packers to play on a short week? Why? Shall we call this The NFL Scheduling Mystery Bowl?
When a team knocks your team out of the playoffs do you root for them on the theory it makes your team look better? Or do you take the bitterness route and root against them? I've always been kind of bitter myself, but I think the Falcons could be a fraud. I'll flip a coin before kick off.
Meanwhile Seattle gets an extra day to prepare for da Bears. Won't matter, this week the Seahawks find out that 10 point underdogs actually do lose sometimes. Bears are home, Bears are hungry, Bears are well rested. That's 1 PM ET on Fox. I call that one the Toilet bowl, I don't think it's going to be a very good game.
Last, but not least, is the Sunday 4:30 PM ET game on CBS between the Patriots and the Jets. The Patriots at home, in the playoffs, and the Jets just keep talking anyway. What shall we call this? The Foot Bowl? The Big Mouth Bowl? (as if we're sponsoring it)? How about the Foot In Mouth Bowl? Vegas says Pats by 9 and Vegas maybe right.
Okay, listen, last week we put up polls so you could pick the games and like 2 of you decided to take part. Hundreds of page views and 2 stinkin' votes. It doesn't cost anything, you're not risking your kid's lunch money or anything like that. You won't suddenly be flooded with e-mails for online gambling. It takes about 5 seconds. I'll put the picks up in the sidebar, please feel free, because it is free and it will just spoil all the fun if you don't.
Have a good, non-eventful weekend.

The Ravens are also on a short week, which would be another reason why the Steelers are rightfully favored (and I'm a Ravens fan).
I believe that’s the price a team pays for making it to the Wild Card game as opposed to wining a playoff spot outright.
You know it’s not like they have a bunch of west coast teams mucking this up, if it had to do with travel or different time zones I’d understand. Your game should be the late Sunday game.
Joe Flacco will probably do his usual cough-up-the-football-to-Troy-Polamalu in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter of the Ravens/Steelers game.
Ah yes! The Cleveland Browns franchise that moved to Baltimore is once again in the playoffs and the pile of garbage that was left by the NFL once again tries to put together another season with the 50th coach in the last 10 years. The contempt that the NFL has for our city just reeks.
We, in Cleveland, are just thrilled to see our franchise win Super Bowls and be in the playoffs year after year while we sit here with an undomed, taxpayer-paid stadium (usable for only 10 events), with nothing but nothing to look forward to. Can’t wait for the next season to begin here in Cleveland . . . (yawn)
tv pays the freight, tv tells them the schedule...
“tv pays the freight, tv tells them the schedule... “
Hence the NFL NIGHT games in Green Bay and New England in December and January.
You’re right of course, New York and Boston get the late Sunday game because of TV.
Any football is better than no football at all...
However, after another season of “The Redzone Channel” on DirecTV, watching a network game is laborious at best, if for no other reason than the constant need to mute the sound for commercials and or commentary by drain-bramaged former football players, as well as the injury updates from the ever-present locker room sports-babes...
**sigh**
The crosses we are asked to bear...
Two interesting notes about the playoffs as they stand:
1) Both AFC conference semifinals are intra-divisional games, where the teams split during the regular season.
2) It would take an extremely unlikely sequence of events, but it is possible for the Packers to be the “bird killers” this year, with wins over the Eagles, Falcons, Seahawks, and Ravens.
Because they are a wild card team. Instead of groaning about it, they should work harder to win their division and have a record good enough to get a by next time.
I think the Falcons could be a fraud. I'll flip a coin before kick off.
The Falcons are the real deal. They have a solid team across the board.
Their game philosophy on both sides of the ball can be boring. Ball control offense (that grabs the ball and won't give it back). Defense that is worried about not giving up points, but not worried about giving up yards. Mistake free football on both sides. Few big plays, but few big mistakes.
It's a boring formula, but it is a winning formula.
The Falcons are also set to be good for a number of years into the future. Finally, they have figured out how to make the right moves to be competitive year in and year out.
You know, this the second week in a row that you’ve written something brilliant. I’d watch that if I were you, people might start to expect it.
Yep RedZone makes it hard to go back to watching a regular game.
I just have a funny feeling that Seattle will wind up hosting the NFC Championship Game.
Brilliant as in totally blowing the NO-SEA call? My NFC draw is totally messed up right now, as I got both games wrong last week.
What time is the Dallas game? ;^)
See, now you’re managing expectations.
September 12th at 1:00 PM.
Do you really want to compare agony with a Texans fan? Three weeks in a row we handed the win over in the last moments of the game....... at least I’m a long time Packers fan so I have a team to cheer for!
September 12th at 1 PM.
