Every day before he left for work, Richard Dennis would kiss his partner on the forehead as he slept, knowing each kiss could be their last.
That's because Dennis' partner, Jair Izquierdo, was in the United States illegally and the pair's civil union wasn't recognized by the federal government. So the New York couple of more than five years lived their lives in constant fear that Izquierdo, a Peruvian citizen who had overstayed his visa, would be deported.
Then, in October, it happened. Izquierdo, 33, was at his job as a cosmetician at a hair salon in New York's East Village on Oct. 20 when he got a phone call from a client asking him if he would take a freelance job doing makeup at a wedding. But when Izquierdo arrived for the consultation, there was no client in sight.
Instead, he says, there were four immigration officials from ICE, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who handcuffed him and took him to a detention center in New Jersey. On Dec. 17, he was deported to Peru.
Izquierdo entered the United States legally in 2001, but overstayed his visa after his application for asylum was denied in 2005. He said the experience of being deported was traumatic.
"It was a weird call. The guy said he wants me to do his wife's makeup at a wedding. But he was nice, so I went," he told AOL News from Peru by phone today. "They put me in handcuffs. I was terrified. I was screaming to them, 'I'm no murderer! I'm no criminal!' I know I'm illegal. But I'm a human being."
Dennis said one of Izquierdo's co-workers called him with the news.

BARF!
It doesn’t matter how hard AOL or anyone else tries to normalize this phenomena, it will always read like some twisted parody.
So, If I understand correctly, for MORE THAN 5 YEARS this criminal made no attempt whatsoever to become a naturalized citizen? And now, he is asking for mercy and leniency?
Boo freakin Hoo!!! Deport both of the fags.
Boo. Hoo.
Two for the price of one on this story.
In this piece of advocacy journalism, we are being urged to be liberal towards illegal aliens and the homosexual marriage movement.
This was a 2 bag Barfer. Richard Dennis is free to return to Peru with his bum chum, so the “separation” is a non-issue. The guy is here illegally, go home and get in line like everyone else!!!
Richard could solve this “problem” by moving to Peru.
The only thing worse than queers are illegal alien queers.
No sympathy here ... for any of a dozen reasons.
So exactly where am I supposed to feel sorry for someone in this?
I know, the taxpayers, for having to pay people to locate and deport illegals like him.
No BARF. But SOB! Does it not tug your heartstrings. Who can resist the pull of each mornings forehead kiss?
And no matter how hard they try, many people’s “give a damn” is broken, so the sob story means nothing to them.
I dont' understand why illegal aliens think being a human being (we know they are, I don't believe that has ever been in question) solves the whole issue. What is all that about?
What drives me crazy are quotes like this:
“My gay relationship should have all the same rights that a straight couple's does.”
and
“I am incredibly angry. I'm just disgusted,” he said. “It's not just about me and Jair. I don't think a lot of people realize that at the federal level, gays have no civil rights in this country.”
If illegals like this guy and his American partner (and more so “Dream Act” kids who were brought here at a very young age) would plead for mercy instead of demanding “justice”, I'd have a bit more sympathy for them.
If instead of basically saying “America is an evil, unfair, bigoted, unjust place that must bow to OUR ideas of what its values, laws and policies should be!” they said, “I know we don't deserve to be here, but America is a place that has always been MORE than fair — merciful and compassionate...”, they would get a lot farther.
Bye..
No, what needs to be understood is why ICE (or the INS as it was known back then) didn't kick him out of the country when his visa ran out.
In my best Church Lady voice, "Well, isn't that special."
