Steve Forbes Wants A Replacement Of The HCR Bill With One That Would Be Like The Food Stamp Program?
1/4/2010 | Laissez-Faire Capitalist

I was watching Forbes on Fox yesterday, and I could have sworn that I heard Steve Forbes say that a potential repeal and replace of Obama Care could be accomplished by Republicans pushing for a repeal and a replacement with a Health Care bill that would be similar to the food stamp program - and it would be set up on a sliding scale basis.

This got me to thinking...

How could Dems possibly be against this?

First of all, it could be set up as being voluntary - no individual mandate. No one is required to sign up for food stamps, and no one would be required to sign up for this, either. Those that want to keep their private coverage could. Obama himself said when campaigning against Hillary Clinton for the Democrat nomination that you couldn't mandate health care coverage anymore than you could mandate home ownership.

Secondly, costs could be kept down with allowing competition across state lines, tort reform, and requiring that when people moved up the economic ladder that they pay back what they used under this system.

This proposal would box Obama in as this would force him to say that he would be against a HCR system that is similar to the food stamp program, would force him to continue to support the individual mandate when it would no longer be necessary, and force him to have to let go of the gov't having total control that it will have under Obama Care.

One early proposal was to just pile up bags of flour and other basics and issue it free to anyone.

Along the way it was realized you'd have "operators" taking all of it and making pizzas to sell to people ~ 'cause people like pizzas, and not everybody has a stove.

Hey, I thought they went to the renewable food stamp card to eliminate the very high rate of theft of food stamps from mail delivery receptacles, and the dozen or so beatings and murders per year of postal carriers attacked for their loads of food stamps and such.

The original idea of food stamps was not just to get food to the poor but also to remove the "shame" of just picking up free stuff at the welfare office. They'd be given "money" that could only be accepted for food.

The people concerned for safety and security of the cards or stamps really don't care one way or the other about the shame or lack thereof of the poor.

I agree. Food Stamps are Americans giving food to people out of PITY. It’s not even CHARITY. People should feel SHAME at the pity and should do anything to get out of it, and feel fantastic when they get a couple of bucks of their own money, earned by themselves, to use at the store.

We had some hard times since the Obama Immaculation, and there were some places I could not pay each month on time. Always paid, but late. The feeling of walking in there when I had not paid was one of SHAME. Then once I had paid, the feeling walking in there was JOY. People should WANT to pay on their own.

I like my “Bachelor Chow” idea better, the free food tastes like dirt anyways, so no one would want to steal it to re-sell it.

Plus I feel that since anything “free” from the government is a faustian bargain to begin with we need to make it an overt faustian bargain instead of trying to hide that fact to protect the self esteem of the leeches.

Sure the government will feed you a decent enough food to keep you alive and healthy but you ain’t gonna like it.

Plus the production of the “bachelor chow” can be sourced to food manufacturing companies which would be done for less money or tax credit for the company. Plus any excess can be shipped to thrid world countries for relief aid and since it is made like dog food and easily storable it would be ideal for this purpose as well.

You would have to register at the welfare office to get it and only one bag per person or family member per week.

Sure there will be abuse, but there will be less abuse.

Food Stamps are this counties original Fiat Currency, until we were taken off the gold standard.

Repeal Zero-Care. And Hillary-Care, and Mitt-Care, and Medi-Care... Anything less is just re-arranging deck chairs.

Heck... Let’s do away with the Carebears while we are at it.

Call it all what it really is: WELFARE. Define it, limit it, and excise it wherever possible.

Years back you could go to the township trustees office to get your emergency welfare in cash.

Then they started getting robbed and killed.

Some people just don't care.

So, unless you come across with that nourishing hog chow we don't cut you in the ONLIEST HAMS in this end of town this next October.

>> He [Forbes] is a RINO <<

So, are you making one of those dreaded ad hominem attacks?

Or are you signaling that you approve of RINO-ism?

It's gotta be one or the other.

If it ain't wrong it's right -- gotta be this or that.

I saw the entire panel discussion on FOX. Steve Forbes was in no way saying that we should replace Obamacare with a food stamp type program. His main point was that Obamacare should be repealed and government should stay out of the health care system. When questioned about what we should do about those “30 million who can’t afford health insurance”, he suggested a voucher system similar to the food stamp program, where the uninsured could use the vouchers to go out in the open market and get health care services.
