This is part of a talk I'm preparing on how lefties think (no need for snark - I know they don't really think).
Conservatives are often puzzled by why lefties, particularly feminist or gay lefties, would support Islamists over, say, their fellow countrymen, particularly when they would be the first on the chopping/lashing/stoning block if Islamists actually took over.
To understand why, you have to understand that lefties are extremely selective in assigning free will to others. It's what leads them to believe that conservatives are one of
a)stupid b)brainwashed c)evil
In the first two cases, conservatives are not assigned free will. We are simply sheep being led by the nose. On those rare occasions that they admit that a conservative might not be stupid or brainwashed, than the only remaining explanation is that he is evil.
In the same way, Islamists are not assigned free will either. For lefties, Islamists are not allowed to act of their own accord for their own reasons toward their own ends. Lacking free will (according to lefties) they can only "react" to something that we in the West have done (like printing cartoons of Mohammed) and lefties will go as far back in history as necessary to find a "cause" for that reaction.
The reasons for this are relatively simple. If people in other countries and cultures can act of their own volition, for their own reasons, toward their own ends, then there are really only two options, both of them bad for the leftie world view. The first is that we defend ourselves which is bad because that could lead to violence, and if there is violence then someone, somewhere, might get hurt. The other option is that we simply submit to their demands which, in the case of, for example, imposition of Sharia law, would lead to some cognitive dissonance as lefties really aren’t too keen on, say, dropping walls on homosexuals or mutilating the genitals of six-year-old girls.
But making non-Americans (or non-Westerners) merely reactors rather than actors opens up a third possibility which is much more attractive to lefties: we can modify their behavior simply by modifying ours. They don’t want US troops in Saudi Arabia? Fine, we’ll leave. They want to destroy Israel? Fine, we’ll throw Israel under the bus (the point at which modifying our behavior in order to influence theirs shades over into submission is not one which lefties wish to dwell upon too deeply).
Note here two major threads of the leftie world view:
1) They (non-Westerners) are unable to control themselves and 2) We (the Western leftie elite) can control them through our words and actions.
Fundamentally, lefties believe that free will comes from having a certain type of education (the one they have or had) and anybody else is merely a reactive sheep whose actions might inadvertantly cause an Islamist to "react".
They are wrong of course, but unfortunately they won't learn that lesson until they have managed to defang all the sheepdogs in the hopes that the wolves, with nothing left to "react" to, will go away and leave them alone.
Marxists and Islamists have two things in common.
Each must control the world in order to be successful. Although they are allies against Western Civilization, especially America, only one can win the ultimate goal of domination.
At the root of it all is the need to eliminate our Christian God and the gospel He inspired. The Marxists elite cannot tolerate the competition for total commitment to the State and the Islamists will recognize no God but Allah as interpreted by Mohammed and his followers. Neither wants to be judged by our God as they know their guilt is unbounded, therefore, replacing Him is their top priority.
It would be interesting to ponder why Asians are left out of this Leftist conclusion, while American blacks and all Hispanics every are firmly in it.

When discuss ‘those with an education like mine’ we are discussing the inherent narcissus of the so called ‘enlightened’ movement. To believe that one is able to assign free will or not, determine it’s nature, and subsequent control the groups you have assigned merely with your thoughts and actions, MAKES YOU A GOD. You do not bow to reality, YOU CREATE IT!
Liberalism, Leftist, Enlightened, are all forms of uber- narcissim. They are also the definition of the term useful idiot. They are down for the cause, man, dirty capitalist!
How the ones controlling the ones who ‘create reality are not emotionally committed to the altruistic goals they purport, they only want personal wealth and power. They well to the useful idiots by convincing them that sometimes violence is necessary in the cause of peace,i.e, Soros Stalin Hitler che Chavez et al.
So now we are at the top of the mountain and realize that the controllers themselves are controlled by a small oligarch of dispassionate power hungry people. We have arrived at mount Olympus where the Gods own everything.(close)
The other issue is the issue of China. In leftist definition, asian-nonwesterner Thailand, Malaysia, etc are included as sheep however China and Japan are somehow exempt. They are neither good nor bad. They considered to be outside the model autonomous and un-controllable.
I offer this to because you stimulated this from me, I hope that my drivel and nonsense can stimulate you.

PS1000, I enjoyed reading your piece and think it's mostly spot on in a very much well-stated way. One point that nagged: the premise that being "stupid" is the equivalent of lacking the ability to exercise free will. For me, when I consider how some liberals exercise free will, many I would say were stupid -- in that they were exercising their free will stupidly. So if in turn a liberal accused me of being stupid (as opposed to brainwashed or a religious zealot/zombie), I would figure the same thing was meant: you're capable of exercising free will and you're doing it stupidly.
No matter. Your point is masterfully made, and it does come down to free will and the willingness to take responsibility for one's own actions. Liberals like free will as long as it matches up with their worldview ... the problem is that their worldview exempts many people from self-responsibility, and that it should be everybody's free will to accept their responsibility by proxy.

Thanks for the response. I lived in France for a long (way too long) time. The French,like the Japanese, like to say “yes” when they mean “no”. But the Japanese do it out of a position of strength (wanting to save face for you) while the French do it out of weakness (not wanting to have a conflict).
Interesting to deeply know other cultures because it also gives you insight into your own (or your own sub-cultures).
