Has anyone been able to pin down how many books Romney sold?Vs. how many he bought himself to distribute to friends, acquaintances, libraries, etc. or just to push up the numbers.

The Mittster got that covered. He made the people who hired him for speaking engagements spend half of the $50K fee on buying his book. I will say that is pretty slick, Pushed the unreadable book into the best seller realm.
