Obamacare Forces Union to Drop Insurance for 6,000 Children
Publius Forum ^ | 11/29/10 | Warner Todd Huston

Remember how Obama said that if you liked your healthcare plan you could keep it? Apparently someone forgot to tell the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in New York because they've announced that Obamacare is forcing them to drop coverage for the children of its 30,000 low-wage members.

The union will be dropping coverage for 6,000 children starting in the new year because new state and federal rules will drive up its costs 60% causing it to face a "dramatic shortfall" between what employers contribute and the premiums charged by the insurance provider.

The union is blaming both state and federal rules but had this to say about the new rules Obamacare is forcing upon it...

Yeah. Why should they get free health care for their kids when we don’t have it?

What do we do about the 60 million people who don’t have health care? Have we got any plans? From where I’m sitting, it seems like the plan is to let most of them die if they get sick.

I just found out that a school friend, owner of a small business, who has no insurance, has breast cancer. She’s 56 - and there is absolutely no assistance for her. She paid for the tests out of pocket, has been looking for someone who will treat her in her county in Florida (Indian River) - there’s nobody, nobody. In the month since she was diagnosed, she’s gone from Stage 3 to Stage 4.

These are the hard-working small business people that make up the backbone of this nation. Private companies have subsidized health care for their workers - if the workers are lucky. Small business owners have to buy it on the private market and there’s nothing, *nothing*, affordable if you are 45+.

So what do we tell her? “You haven’t got the money. It’s time to die of an illness that would be treatable if you were rich enough to count for anything in this country.”

Yeah I’m bitter.

It's too late to help your friend now but for others in this situation a word of warning: A preexisting condition is only legally a preexisting condition if there is a medical record of it. If you suspect a problem, get insurance first. Then have the tests. If you can only afford a high deductible policy the tests will still cost you out of pocket but if there is something wrong the insurance will kick in. The insurance company will refuse to pay but appeal the decision and then they will pay (they have to unless they can prove fraud).

I feel for your friend. She's probably in a situation like I was in for several years when I couldn't afford insurance but made too much to qualify for low cost insurance.

I'm sorry for your friend. She took a gamble by not buying insurance. I, too, have had breast cancer, and another bout with cancer, so I could NOT get insurance on my own, I don't think.

There is NOT 60 million people who have no health insurance!! Besides your friend, how many do you know??/ That would be 1 in 5 who doesn;t.... I know none.

“This is Obamao care working exactly like it is supposed to work.”

That is exactly right. It is destroying private insurance and forcing even the SEIU to ask for a government plan. That is Obama’s goal. A single payer system with the insurance industry eliminated.

I bet you actually know people without health insurance. They just don’t talk about it.

It wasn’t that my friend “took a gamble” - she was looking for insurance for several years. She couldn’t find anyone who would cover her back when she was healthy. (Did you know that “menopausal age” is considered a “pre-existing condition”?) It’s not a gamble when you don’t have any choice.

Besides my friend - well, there is myself. We are also small business owners who can’t find coverage. I know several other small business owners who don’t have any coverage. In addition, none of their employees have coverage. A lot of them are young, and feel lucky to just be employed, so don’t worry about insurance - until they get into an accident.

Then there are the 132 million Americans without dental insurance - which explains all the people missing teeth that I saw working in the Home Depot yesterday.

Are you telling me that ther is NO INSURANCE COMPNAY that will insure people who own small businesses?? I know that there is a Baptist group that insures other Baptists, so I assume that there is a small business ins. co. that pools you all together.

There is no insurance company that will insure small business owners for less than thousands of dollars a month. There is no “pooling” done for SB owners - you go through a broker, fill out apps, and wait for bids.

No insurance companies made my frioend an offer, because she was of “menopausal age.” (Apparently, menopausal women statistically ebgin to seek treatment or have medical issues, so companies don’t want to insure them.)

When we tried to get insurance coverage, no companies would make bids to us, either, because of pre-existing conditions - treatment for high blood pressure.

If you try to hide a pre-exiting condition, the companies will cancel you retroactively once they7 find out through checking your health records through your doctor and pharmacist.

Insurance companies are for-profit, of course, so they aren’t looking to lose money on the policies they write. I don’t blame them! But there is no option, other than Medicaid - and to qualify for that, you have to be very low-income and you can’t own a house.

Yeah sure ... when I worked for a major insurance company for 24 years. The policy was pretty good, reasonable co-pays, along with fairly low premiums.

But corporations weren’t hiring 50 year old IT specialists with 25 years of experience back in the mid 00s, when my old “home” shut down my division. They wanted young programmers on the cheap or guys here on visas. We opened a business and tried to buy insurance on our own. No luck.

If you’ve got it, you’re doing okay, for as long as it lasts.

Thanks for the suggestion - she tried them, but Komen apparently doesn’t help pay for treatment.

She’s got a husband, who owns the business with her. I suppose I could suggest her Church hold a bake sale, but that might be too late, considering how fast it’s growing. Her family up here in NJ is still trying to figure out how to help long-distance. They just found out this week, and I heard about it at Thanksgiving. There’s not even a way to find out how much treatment is going to cost, and hospitals don’t usually accept people without insurance.

Unless they come in through the Emergency Room - then the hospital has to take them. But I don’t think breast cancer qualifies as an emergent condition, like a heart attack or a stroke.

That’s just the way it is. If you have health insurance, you are fortunate.
