These days the South Suburban Cook County city of Chicago Heights, about 25 miles from Chicago, is known mostly for empty store fronts, dilapidated neighborhoods, and empty space where factories once stood. It wasn't always like this. In fact, once Chicago Heights wound up in the Guinness Book of World records. It had nearly 90 factories during World War II, giving it the most factories per person in the world. (Chicago Heights population is about 30,000) In 1950, Ford Motors moved their plant right next door, and in the late 1970's,

a few years ago, somehow we got the main highway and took a “shortcut” and ended up going thru Chicago Heights......a little scary to say the least.....
Interesting article.
My elderly aunt and uncle just left The Heights this year.
They lived there over 50 years.
The first neighborhood became too dangerous over 20 years ago and they moved to a newer neighborhood.
They were lucky to sell their second Chicago Heights home, even at a greatly reduced price from what they’d have gotten a few years ago.
They now reside in northern WI and are happy as clams.
When I’d drive from WI to visit them in the Heights,I loved to go to Arellio’s Pizza for dinner with them.
Dey went to da nort woods, did dey ja?
:)
:)
I’m REALLY happy they got out...and are safe and happy in nort wisCONsin. ;) :)
Aurelios's. I miss it too. My parents, who both passed away within the last two years, used to take me there whenever I'd go home and visit. They lived in Lansing. I did too, till I moved to CT.
CT sucks big time. Not sure I'd want to go back to Illinois either.
I have learned to avoid any neighborhood, town or city with the word “heights” in it.
If you ever come to New York Brooklyn Heights is real nice. Very expensive place to live though. Great skyline views of Manhattan.
Patty's only seen those sights.
What a crazy pair!
Had some good times going to the movies at the Lincoln theater. I think the price of movies was like 35 cents and popcorn 15 cents and a candy store next door. There was another theater there too, had a rounded roof...can't remember the name...
You can tell by their letters to the editor in the Plain Dealer. We normal people laugh them off as the "Hysterics on the Heights."
They are so conservative too. Like all my family.
They eagerly voted in November, and helped us elect Scott Walker and Ron Johnson.
They helped boot Russ Feingold out of the US Senate!
Good locale for obama to organizer to have his own reality show, eh? Show Sarah Palin some real gritty reality TV - you betcha!
YESSSSSSSS!!!!! Tell them from one Cheesehead to another...THANK YOU!!!!
Mu aunt mentioned one very odd thing that the powers in Chicago Heights do when a home owning family moves in or out of the city. Uh, I don’t know what it’s called officially but they were charged 600 dollars on their real estate papers for the priviledge of leaving the city. I was also told that you pay 600 to move into the city. Now because my uncle is 90, they refunded some of the money. Now if that ain’t Cook County politics, I don’t know what is. We Wisconsin relatives were agast to think they charge to move in or out of The Heights. My aunt told it as one of the many Chicago type political games that goes on.
Just curious. What do you dislike about CT?
They just vistited a cheese factory ‘up nort’ today.
They’re really enjoying Wisconsin.
I like it 100 percent better since Nov.2nd!
Ja ja, probably one ov my relatives started that cheese factory, back when....when the cows roamed free.
:)

Ok, the cows made me type “Mu” instead of “My”.
But they’re cousins, identical cousins.
LOL!!! Dumb cows can’t even spell right, can they? ;)
