Interesting article.
My elderly aunt and uncle just left The Heights this year.
They lived there over 50 years.
The first neighborhood became too dangerous over 20 years ago and they moved to a newer neighborhood.
They were lucky to sell their second Chicago Heights home, even at a greatly reduced price from what they’d have gotten a few years ago.
They now reside in northern WI and are happy as clams.
When I’d drive from WI to visit them in the Heights,I loved to go to Arellio’s Pizza for dinner with them.

I have learned to avoid any neighborhood, town or city with the word “heights” in it.

Went to Jefferson and Greenbriar Elementary Schools in the late 50's, early 60's. In those days, parents fixed their childrens' lunches and parents would come in on special occasions and have cupcakes, Kool-Aid, and serve Sloppy Joes. We could signup for milk in the morning but we had to pay, like a month at a time. In the winter-time, sometimes the milk would be icy...sometimes sour! :(

Had some good times going to the movies at the Lincoln theater. I think the price of movies was like 35 cents and popcorn 15 cents and a candy store next door. There was another theater there too, had a rounded roof...can't remember the name...

Mu aunt mentioned one very odd thing that the powers in Chicago Heights do when a home owning family moves in or out of the city. Uh, I don’t know what it’s called officially but they were charged 600 dollars on their real estate papers for the priviledge of leaving the city. I was also told that you pay 600 to move into the city. Now because my uncle is 90, they refunded some of the money. Now if that ain’t Cook County politics, I don’t know what is. We Wisconsin relatives were agast to think they charge to move in or out of The Heights. My aunt told it as one of the many Chicago type political games that goes on.
