So Tina Fey won another award for not being Sarah Palin.
Good for Tina Fey. Maybe it will help with her self-esteem issues.
I am not saying she is not talented.
Just lazy.
So here is the script to my latest visit to Xtra Normal Land.
Hi readers of the Don Surber blog.
I am Tina Fey.
Star of a situation comedy and the maker of a hit movie.
Just like Penny Marshall.
But Tina Fey is not just another Penny Marshall.
I won the coveted Mark Twain Award for my political biting satire.
I am the Mark Twain of the twenty first century.
And not its Penny Marshall.
I, Tina Fey, take on the Establishment. I bring the rich and the powerful to their knees.
Just not the current president of the United States.
Or the Senate majority leader.
Or the current Speaker of the House.
Tina Fey goes after bigger quarry.
The former governor of Alaska.
Now that is cutting edge Mark Twain level satire.
In his day, I am sure that Mark Twain mocked G. Bratz Brown, William Hayden English, and all those other losing vice presidential candidates of the nineteenth century instead going after the actual presidents of Mark Twains era.
I am sure that is what I would find if I read a few of his books.
Like Huck Finn.
Uh, Great Expectations.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
That sort of thing.
Books. I guess they did not have television back then.
But they do today. And I am a star. A queen. Girls, never underestimate the power of glasses.
I started out as the head writer for the Saturday Night Live. Then I moved to being in front of the camera. And now I have stretched my acting wings in a sit com where I play
The head writer for the Saturday Night Live.
Some people say I only win these awards because I look like Sarah Palin.
But that is not true.
I also look like Ashleigh Banfield.
I worked hard on my political satire of Sarah Palin.
I spent hours researching my subject.
Then I threw that research out and took the easy way out by using the Urban Legends people made up about things she never said or did.
Like charging women for a rape kit.
She never did that, but I think it is hilarious to joke about rape, so I use it.
Fake but accurate, as they say at the New York Times.
It is much easier to mock someone that way, rather than go by what they did or said.
Here is what I said in accepting my Mark Twain award.
And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women except, of course those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape kit and stuff, But for everybody else, its a win-win. Unless youre a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know actually, I take it back. The whole things a disaster.
The audience roared with laughter.
Eat your heart out, Penny Marshall.
That was a great night of ripping Sarah Palin for saying dumb things she never said.
I just wish Mark Twain had been there to give me his award.
I wonder where he was.
You can make a lot of money being someone elses mouthpiece.
Of course you have to abandon character, integrity, trustworthyness, self-respect, etc...
...but you can make a lot of money.
“I am not saying she is not talented.”
I am. I could care less about Fey’s politics. The woman just isn’t the least bit funny and never has been.
I’d rather sit through a two-hour tribute to Judy Tenuta than watch ten minutes of Fey. (and that’s saying something!)
Please go back & read the article.
Is it wrong that I actually thought Baby Mama was a funny movie? When you’re a politician you’re opening the door to everything - including impersonations. I thought SP was funny on SL when she sat in. SP took it in stride.
Fey has had a narrow career in humor (I'm being generous here) rather than the life time for which this award was meant to recognize. Sad.
Tina Fey is her own biggest fan. She doesn’t care what you think, as long as you dont mess with her mirror.
Not only that, but when Tina Fey imitates Sarah Palin, she looks pretty good, but sometimes when she’s just herself - - not so much. I know she’s a good looking woman, but Sarah looks good all the time, and yet when Tina looks like she did the other night, it was what someone on Fox described as “a hairstyle that is an affront to humanity”...
You’re very clever. Bet the boys ‘round the checkers table are in awe of you.
Tina Fey is annoying. She's not funny. She made a stupid joke about Palin regarding rape kits that was cut from the PBS telecast, but I've never heard Tina Fey say anything - comical or serious - about Bill Clinton's assault on Juanita Broaddrick. Or any of his other NON-CONSENSUAL behavior. In fact, I don't remember Tina Fey lashing out at David Letterman over his statutory rape joke that targeted Willow Palin. Tina Fey is a liberal before she's a comic. She didn't deserve this award or anything resembling it.
You're right. This is about as bad as giving the Nobel Peace prize to some guy who just goes out and gives vague speeches about change before winning an election. The Mark Twain Award should be reserved for people like Bob Newhart or Martin Short, whose contributions of humor to our society will stand the test of time. Tina Fey? She'll be lucky to be a trivia answer 30 years from now.
Never mind.
Most comics are liberal, but the good ones make you forget about politics because you’re doubled-over laughing so hard with tears coming out of your eyes. Carl Reiner, Bob Newhart, Mel Brooks and Martin Short would probably fit that description for most people. Tina Fey doesn’t. Tina Fey is full of herself. Tina Fey is a political pundit who might make a few liberals laugh, but I seriously don’t remember ever laughing out loud at anything she’s said. She’s like a calmer version of Kathy Griffin.
Mark Twain was a communist.
They are giving an award in the name of a communist, Mark Twain, to a communist who plays a comedian on TV. This is not shocking at all. It’s perfect.
I thought “30 Rock” was really funny, but that’s about the only work of Fey’s that I’ve seen.
