Oh, we have lots to talk about regarding Catholics and Israel
but only two stories. First, Archbishop Bustros has clarified his earlier remarks at the Middle East Synod which were so offensive to Jews (and offensive also to many Catholics, myself included) for an exclusive report at Jihad Watch. I have a question for Robert Spencer. Why did you apologize to Archbishop Bustros? His clarification seems even worse than his earlier remarks. Perhaps you are apologizing just for reporting more extensively on his remarks than you should have, because you did not understand the full story and are now reporting the full story? The full story being worse than his earlier statements, we should rather ask for Archbishop Bustros to come to know the error of his judgment and then apologize to Israel. Now to the second story. Catholic author Gerald McDermott wrote yesterday at First Things a more theologically palatable, reasonable and informative essay on Israel and the Vatican.

Archbishop clarifies synod remarks condemned by Jewish organizations
Well, as I said on the earlier threads, this is NOT the position of the “Vatican,” the Pope, or the Catholic Church.
This guy Butros appears to be a jerk. Not the first bishop to be a jerk, I’m afraid.
And, FWIW, he is not a Roman Catholic. He belongs to an Eastern Church that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
Finally, there were a few other bishops at that synod (meaning a gathering of bishbops from a country or region who are called every few years to meet at the Vatican) who spoke out AGAINST efforts to talk to Muslims as long as those same Muslims were busy killing Christians in the area.
In other words, this guy may be a jerk, but he does not represent the Church.
I did a search and couldn’t find other threads posted about this... can you post them.
I’m not sure which ones were posted here, but here’s the results of a search for “Vatican Jews not chosen people”
I do remember that people kept talking about the Vatican saying this, when in fact it was not the Vatican but a Middle Eastern synod of bishops—and apparently only some of the bishops, or maybe just one of them misspeaking for the others.
He taught what the Catholic Church has always taught. Sorry to hear that offends you.
