Network news and the internet were abuzz with the report and video by Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCBS of a reported missile launch late Monday afternoon -- around 5 PM. Both the Air Force and the Navy denied they had any missiles launches at the time. According to CBS News the Defense Department remains baffled.
"Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. "So far, we've come up empty with any explanation."
And they go on:
"The FAA told CBS News that they ran radar replays of a large area west of Los Angeles based on media reports of the location of a possible missile launch, but they did not reveal any fast moving unidentified targets in that area. The FAA also did not receive any reports of any unusual sightings from pilots in the area."
"The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no further details."
A search for flights that could have left a contrail led me to US Airs flight 808 from Honolulu to Phoenix. The flight took off from Honolulu at 10:06 AM HST, passed over Catalina Island at 5:03 PM PST....

Not like a missile. The plume from an srb comes out so fast it leaves sawtooth edges. Puffs of smoke. Not water vapor.
Yes. I also once lived in Orlando like you and I also stayed in a Holiday Inn but since the object in question is on film, what is the relevancy of your question?
Have you ever watched a missile launch? Not film of one, but an actual missile launch? Do you seriously think you’re more qualified than a long-time FReeper (I think his handle is Missileer) who spent something like 17 years working around missiles, to identify the event in the video?
Nope, and I suspect that nearly 100% of the people that think this was a missile didn't watch this supposed one live either but are basing their opinion on the video.
Do you have a photo for an example?
I don't know. I have never seen 'Missileer' post.
Wake up, dear.
If the Pentagon wants to deceive Americans by telling them it wasn't a missile, they must have their reasons, and chances are they're damned good reasons. Doesn't change the reality that an organized attempt to deceive thee and me is happening at high levels in media and government.
Please point out these 'whole lotta' on FR. As for a 'whole lotta people with missile experience' calling in to talk radio .... I have a brige in Brooklyn to sell you.
look at any daytime launch photos of a solid fuel rocket. You can see the sawtooth patterns on the edges of the exhaust plume. It is different that a jet trail. That baby was smokin it to the West on a sub orbital trajectory. I have seen a lot of them go off from the Cape while I was out Fishin. Also at the end of the clip you can see the staging begin. I have seen it many times. Bolts blow off the first stage and then the second stage fires up. At that point the plume usually stops and you just see the glow because it is so high. Orbital shots go up at a steeper angle and the turn downrange.
Your comment seem eerily similar to what I'd see on the average Truther post on some left wing site.
How many passenger landing strips do we have 35 miles off the coast of California for commerical heavy traffic? That’s where the trail began - the middle of the ocean.
So, what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? This is a matter of common sense and using information available to you, the expertise of people experienced in aeronautics and missile science, along with first-hand experience, to gage what has happened. Apparently you think that the government will never lie to you, and your reason for thinking this is because of what lefties write on blogs.
1. Fact: The government lies to us.
2. Fact: The government said it was a plane.
3. Fact: Some guy on the radio said it was a missile
4. In order for 1 2 and 3 to be true, it must be a missile.
Case closed.
Don't get too close to the edge of the earth, you might fall off.
I agree with you.
I've seen a crapload of nonsense believed by people thinking they're using common sense and I don't sit and wait for some "expert" to tell me what to think. I look at the opposing arguments and make up my own mind.
Apparently you think that the government will never lie to you, and your reason for thinking this is because of what lefties write on blogs.
Nope. I don't implicitly trust the government. But when the evidence available to me says they're NOT lying to me in some case, I don't discount it solely on the basis that the statement is coming from the government either.
Your top shot is a SRB bound for orbit. A lower trajectory and about 45 more seconds would match the mystery shot off Catalina. The other is obviously a jet. Notice the puffs on the SRB. That is exhaust. Not contrail.
Me too I grew up in Cocoa Beach. That sucker is a missile. Not a jet. It is a sub orbital SRB. And it stages at the end of the clip.
Have you ever seen a live shot?
