The impending 2011 military drawdown in Afghanistan conjures the specter of Saigon. Already one hears chopper blades, echoes of Operation Frequent Wind,slicing both the air over Kabul, and our promise of a brighter future for Afghan women.

In late September, I spoke with the director of an influential Afghan women’s rights organization. I wanted to know if there is a concrete contingency plan for securing schools established after the US Liberation of Afghanistan. I assumed that anticipation of the return of the Talban and lack of US oversight of the “Moderate Islamic” government in place now, would be a major concern for those housing and educating women.

Far from believing that the departure of the US Military would occasion renewed oppression of women, the director was sanguine. I discovered that, as I count-down to the end of the Jarrett Regime, the director is joyously anticipating the end of the “US Occupation.”

The article says:

support leaders in Afghanistan who are committed to Western values and a Sharia-Free country.

That is fair enough, but according to the information in the article itself, there are few such people in Afghanistan.
