For general purpose knife (one large blade), I’ve been happy with an Ozark Trail brand knife I got in the camping section of Wal-Mart.
I use mine constantly. It sharpens easily, is heavy (4” long closed, 7.5” open), has a locking blade and a serious beltclip bradded to the knife body. It has a smooth edge, not serrated, which works best for me.
Plus, its cheap...twelve bucks, so when I lose it, it’s no big deal.
When you only have one.

Price: $200-$400
Cheap Crododile Dundee replicas are available at various online outlets for as little as $20. However, if you want the real deal, a German-made Kershaw Bowie, these are hard to find, and your best bet is to search eBay.
Can’t remember if it was Sears or Home Depot that had a pretty good selection of knives for $20 or less. If there’s even a remote chance the police would hassle, I’d feel a lot better about just giving them a cheapo. My BIL works construction. I got him one of the S&W knives as a stocking stuffer...that was about 5 years ago...still going strong.
Doubt it's better than a wave though... ;)
The reason why they call that a “fighting Bowie” is because no one starts fights with a man wearing that beast. The knife literally fights for you, without any actual violence.
Generally a gun or even a bow works better than a knife for hunting.
I’m going to assume that you are taking it hunting as a secondary tool. Then the issue is, what are you hunting, and will you be skinning it in the field?
A small sharp pocket knife will do everything that must be done for field dressing on anything up to an elk.
If you don’t want to reach in up to your elbows, and feel compelled to split the sternum in the field, any good sharp ~5” knife will do. Stay away from stainless steel as it won’t hold an edge.
For skinning, get a smaller knife with a lot of curve on the edge and a harder more brittle blade (it will stay sharper longer).
If you’re hunting rabbits, just use your hands. If you hunting hogs, remember to carry a pig sticker.
Kershaw-Solingen, Germany. 11 3/4" oal Bowie w/ 7" stainless blade.
One that could slice off the head of a 400 lb. Yorkshire pig in one swoop.
Beautiful Damascus Steel!
If interested in Damascus, go to eBay and search “Stek knives.” Some interesting blades. I have several.
Thanks. I think that is the same knife Joe pictured.
