Attention Malia and Sasha: The remote is in Mom's hands this Saturday, and she's sending a message to you and the rest of the nation's kids to "Go out and play."
At noon EST on Sept. 25, first lady Michelle Obama will tell Nick viewers to "get ready to shut down your computers, put down your cell phones and turn off your TVs." Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Nick Jr. and TeenNick will then go off the air for three hours, according to the Associated Press.
The cartoon blackout is part of Nickelodeon's annual Worldwide Day of Play campaign, an annual effort to encourage families to get kids and families moving and off the couch. The network isn't goofing around and is turning screens black.
But take heart Nick fans, before and after this TV intervention, you can soak up six hours of back-to-back "SpongeBob Squarepants" episodes.
Meanwhile, "iCarly" poses this question to teen and tween fans on the Nick show's website: What's the best way to spend this Saturday?
Pranking Your sister/brother?
Sleeping all day?
Eating ice cream, nonstop?
Watching an all-new ICarly at 8 p.m.?
We know the answer in our house: All of the above.
Schadenfreude!
I’m soooo glad Nick and Mrs. Obama are here to help my children. We just returned from a two week vacation from The Grand Canyon, hiking into houses at Mesa Verde, exploring Yellowstone, spelunking a lava tube (very cool, and a good workout) and seeing Mount Rushmore. My children are simply starving for some time outside playing....it’s good to know the government is here to help. Never mind that we’re all exhausted from the trip and unpacking and would like some downtime and something silly to watch.
Stupid government. Redundant.
“Today is Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play. We’re outside playing and you should be too. So turn off your TV, shut down your computer, put down that cell phone, and go all out. We’ll be back at three.”
Repeat.
Halt din zoken!
Ping!
And Disney channels will have their best ratings 'Evah'
I just checked - it's off in Eastern time but the Western time channel is still going - to be cut off in a few minutes - lol.
Go out into the streets and take a chance on getting shot by drug dealers while your single mom is working a minimum-wage retail job on the busiest day of the week. That’s right, kiddies; go on. Marriage is bad. Welfare is good. People who look down on out-of-wedlock sex and illegitimate parents are haters.
Hey Manchelle!! Seeing the daily escapades of you and your man-child is like watching a cartoon marathon every day.
On the weekends my mother would give us money to go to the local movie theater. Every so often they'd offer a Saturday cartoon marathon. Back then it cost us 15 cents to get in, and 10 cents for a box of popcorn. I'm glad I was a kid in the 50's. It was a time when you didn't lock your doors, and you knew everybody on your street.
You forgot to mention they should go out and play so they can be abducted, raped and murdered by an illegal alien, or run over by a drunk illegal driving a car.
Thanks for the ping.
Is she kidding? Imagine the audacity of this woman to tell us how to raise our kids. Maybe I can tell her to take her kids to Church...at least on Christmas.
Good! Now the advertisers will vote against her husband, too.
In all fairness, these channels have gone off the air for this in the past.
Yep, after I wrote the post about our childhood countless more things that we did came to my mind including most all the things you mention. Those were the days!!!
