The Colbert Gambit. Looks Like It Worked.

(Instapundit) — DISTRACTION: So, yesterday reader John Mark Williams suggested that the Colbert testimony was intended to distract from coverage of Christopher Coates’ testimony about the Justice Department’s racism scandals. If so, it’s worked. Front page of Daily Caller: Colbert. Drudge led with Colbert until the news of the Klein & Zucker firings came out. Limbaugh led off today talking about Colbert. NRO has covered Colbert at The Corner, but not Coates. Washington Examiner headline: Colbert. Looking around other sites, I see more about Colbert than Coates. Hot Air and Power Line did better.

But let me quote the Power Line treatment: “Coates’s testimony is a bombshell. It exposes a couple of Obama administration scandals at once. One involves the Obama administration’s attempt to cover up the rationale for burying the case against the NBPP. The other involves the Obama administration’s support for the racially based administration of justice. Coates’s testimony is suggestive of other scandals as well. You probably won’t be hearing much about it on the broadcast news tonight or in the papers tomorrow, but we all should do everything we can to get the word out.”

I expect the usual JournoList types to provide cover (it’s not like this is a scandal involving a Republican Justice Department, after all, which would be news), but I’m kind of surprised to see so many people who should know better taking the bait on a non-story about a fictional character.

Just for fun I entered the following search terms into Google News to see exactly what the score was. At 11:25am MST Colbert was winning:

Christopher Coates Hearing 45 items

Christopher Coates Testimony 31 items

Stephen Colbert Hearing 873 items

Stephen Colbert Testimony 873 items

Rush eventually got around to it in the third hour, but not in enough detail for the uninitiated to understand its importance.

Items in the OLD media. Time to turn on the spigots of the NEW media to this.

I agree. I’ve started noticing that fake controversies seem to be deployed to suck the air out of real controversies. I used to think it was accidental or coincidental, but its starting to look engineered.

Yeah I think so. Unfortunately Coates laid out a longstanding pattern of injustice going back to the Clinton administration (Entrenched bureaucrats) and I think the same ideological and political bias will continue.

Look what happened the last time the voter intimidation case started to come to a boil. The NAACP released a meaningless resolution that called the tea party racist and it became all anyone could talk about.

The only way we can fight it is by ignoring the created news and staying on message.

Manufactured distraction from an event that is embarrassing to the left is nothing new. It's called 'Wag The Dog' and Bill Clinton used it (to only slight success) during the Lewinsky sex scandal by bombing Bosnia. The left is good at it, the right, not so much.

You must realize that the Media is nothing more than a part of the Democrat Campaign Committee. Free Campaign Commercials 24/7.

I dont think the criminal media would have covered Coates if there had been no other news at all. They’d trot out some piece on vegetables in season before they will make the O admin look bad.

Pretty interesting and it worked.
The Republicans ever loyal to the ruling elite did their part by NOT boycotting Lofgren’s hearing.

Friday @ 3pm isn’t really a very good time to be bringing it up anyway. Let it stew over the weekend and review the key points (PowerLine says 2 scandals unearthed plus the whole Shabazz at the WH stuff)and start slapping some folks around with it next week.

Colbert was enough of a Dem embarrassment that it deserves it’s own time in the pantheon of Dem stupidity. NBPP has been simmering for months and is NOT going away. Properly played, you could have Holder in front of Congress toward the end of October. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

Of course it worked. The tv media (except for Fox) will ignore it. And any mention of the Coates testimony in newspapers will be so buried in the paper you will need a magnifying glass to find it.

I agree with you. Hopefully this will have legs.
And yes, it would be sweet to see a perp-walk by Holder.
