A coalition of law enforcement agencies has arrested four Nuestra Familia gang leaders and 30 gang members, California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced at a press conference in Oakland on Tuesday. Several of those caught were allegedly given orders to commit murder and other violent crimes by imprisoned gang leaders who sent them encrypted messages via cell phones.

Many of the crimes were allegedly ordered by “incarcerated inmates that are supposed to be serving their time and out of circulation,” said Brown, who served as Oakland’s mayor from 1998 to 2006. “But because of the introduction of cell phones these individuals in prison are maintaining their role, their hierarchical position in the gang.” Brown explained that the imprisoned leaders of Nuestra Familia are ordering the crimes from prison and the crimes are happening out on the streets.

WTF? What kind of country club prisons are we running that allow prisoners to have cell phones?

Admin Moderator:

Could you please fix the title? “Crime” should be “Crimes.” Thanks.

This will get harder to stop as miniaturization continues, and the phone market further diversifies.

Eventually you should be able to get a phone as small as a bluetooth headset.

Cell phones? Bleeding heart Democrats really suck.

We’re probably paying for them.

This country is being run by crooks in every nook and cranny
being paid off or too scared to do what’s right.

Inmates should be treated like the scum they are.

One word: jammers.

No jails allow prisoners to have cell phones that I’m aware of. They are highly sought after items in the prison black market though, probably only surpassed in value by firearms.

Then if a prisoner is caught with one, it should be an automatic additional five years added to their sentence.

I make calls with gmail all the time. How are they going to stop that, if they give inmates computers?

Wardens and guards. Pay to play.

Oh snap! Computers too?

They should just keep jails and prisons in the dark ages
and do the job they were built for.

Actually if you are a real shot caller in the gang, I’d wager the phone is far more highly prized than the gun. You can always get some flunky who hasn’t made his bones yet to whack someone for you...

Good point. But I think the gang leaders don’t need to pay to have phones smuggled in for them either.

Yup, you can text message people through pretty much any email too nowadays, if their cell carrier supports it. I know Verizon does at least. Though, if the prison computers have internet access, there’s really no need for cell phones, they can send PGP encryped emails, set up IRC chats, Skype, whatever.

Not sure how much internet access prisons are allowing though.

Actually, I amend that. I know for certain some prisons do have internet access, at least in other countries. I used to know a group of guys in a German prison who played an online game with me.

I imagine only the top bad guys can get the cell phones. (Or would be allowed to have them via the gang heiarchy). I think an automatic death sentence, with perhaps a 5 day period for review would be reasonable.

It just pisses me off when I watch those “Gangland” shows on the History channel on how the gang members get off so lightly, or can still run the operation from prison. One of these days it will be open season on them.
