Ulysses Grant was a drunk and a failure in life until he led the Union Army to victory. Graduating from West Point and being promoted twice for bravery in the Mexican War was failure?
The business he started failed, and he probably felt like a failure before the Civil War - but he did more in his life before 1860 than most.
